TV-Series
Description
Gabimaru is a teenage shinobi, standing approximately one hundred fifty centimeters tall, with a lean and muscular build that belies his unassuming stature. He has untamed white hair, a trait said to reflect his powerful internal energy, and typically maintains a deadpan facial expression matched with dark red eyes. He most often wears the frayed black or dark blue robe of his former village, Iwagakure, complete with arm and shin guards and a black mask that can be pulled up to conceal the lower half of his face.
Known as Gabimaru the Hollow, he was raised from infancy by the chief of Iwagakure after the village leader executed his parents for attempting to flee. The chief subjected him to grueling shinobi training designed to strip away all emotion, molding him into the village's most infamous and notoriously ruthless assassin, capable of killing twenty armed men single-handedly without receiving a single wound. His reputation for cold-blooded efficiency made him a legend among other ninja clans, and his skills are considered so exceptional that none of the shogun's traditional execution methods, including beheading and burning, proved effective against him.
On the surface, Gabimaru embodies the calm and apathetic demeanor of a perfected killer. He rarely shows concern, remaining unfazed even in the face of execution or powerful enemies, and tends to complain in a flat, blunt tone about nuisances he considers distractions from his primary goal. However, his personality underwent a profound transformation after he was rewarded with marriage to the chief's daughter, a kind and gentle woman named Yui. Yui's belief that embracing emotions is the true source of strength directly contradicted the chief's teachings, and her affection awakened a deep-seated humanity within him. He fell in love with her and, for the first time, desired to abandon his life as a murderer and live peacefully, even beginning to spare the lives of his targets.
This wish to retire led to his betrayal, as Iwagakure turned him over to the authorities to be executed. Yet it is this same love that drives his entire journey; his sole motivation for accepting the dangerous mission to retrieve the Elixir of Life from the island of Kotaku is to earn a full pardon and return to his wife. He remains utterly faithful to Yui, immune to seduction, and his memories of her serve as the anchor for his sanity and resolve, even as he faces the island’s horrors.
In the story, Gabimaru is the central figure among a group of death row convicts sent to the mysterious island, each assigned a Yamada Asaemon executioner as a monitor. His assigned monitor is Sagiri, a young executioner who initially intends to kill him but instead recognizes his hidden will to live and offers him the chance for a pardon. While their relationship begins as strictly professional, Gabimaru and Sagiri form a deep bond, with her becoming his ally on the path to redemption, helping him accept his emotions rather than suppress them. He also forms a pragmatic alliance with a fellow kunoichi, Yuzuriha, who is a skilled survivor like himself. Though their partnership is initially built on mutual self-interest, they develop a genuine camaraderie rooted in their shared expertise and respect for each other's reliability.
Throughout the mission, Gabimaru displays significant development. He struggles against his ingrained Iwagakure conditioning that sentimentality is weakness, often falling into a murderous, bloodthirsty state in battle. He initially tries to kill Sagiri to prevent her from slowing him down but finds he cannot, as her words echo Yui's. Over time, he begins to show genuine care and concern for others, acting subconsciously to save Sagiri and the mysterious child Mei, and even vowing to help her achieve her wish. By the end of his journey, he has completely rejected the heartless teachings of his village and learns to smile and laugh genuinely in the company of others.
As a warrior, Gabimaru possesses superhuman physical strength, endurance, and speed, honed by the hellish training of Iwagakure which allows him to perform feats like temporarily stopping his own heart. He is a master of taijutsu and a genius combat strategist, flawlessly taking down opponents even with his hands bound. His signature ninjutsu ability is fire-based, allowing him to rapidly increase his body heat and ignite the oils on his skin to shroud himself in flames, an attack known as Ninpō: Hibachi. He can project these flames into various forms, from fireballs to massive waves of fire. More fundamentally, Gabimaru learns to manipulate his life force, known as Tao, which enhances his physical abilities and grants him heightened sensory perception. His body is attuned to the Fire attribute of Tao, and he eventually overcomes a condition called Arborification, gaining regenerative abilities that make him exceptionally difficult to kill.
