Description
Juliette, almost exclusively called Julie, is a young girl of the dwarf race who is introduced in the second part of Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation II. Her background is one of significant hardship, as she was born to Bazelle, a blacksmith, and Lilitella, a jeweler. Due to overwhelming financial troubles, Julie and her parents were sold into slavery. Her parents were quickly purchased and separated from her, leaving Julie alone in a slave market in the city of Sharia, where she remained due to her poor health and malnourished state.

Physically, Julie’s appearance reflects her difficult origins. As a dwarf, she has a naturally petite and slender frame, with pale skin and unkempt, feathery light red-orange hair. When first encountered, she is described as being deathly thin and undernourished, a stark testament to her time in captivity. In keeping with the customs of her tribe, the Coal Miner Tribe, six-year-old Julie had not yet been given a name when she was bought. It is Zanoba Shirone who names her Juliette, in honor of his deceased younger brother, Julius, and she is affectionately called Julie or Juri.

Julie’s personality is initially defined by the trauma she has endured. At first, she is apathetic, silent, and seemingly in a state of despair, leading a character like Rudeus to believe she wished for death. However, she proves this assumption wrong when she expresses a simple, powerful desire to live, which motivates her new masters to commit to her care. As she is integrated into a more stable and kind environment, her true childlike nature begins to emerge. She gradually starts showing more feelings, becomes curious about the world, and toddles after Zanoba, asking him questions. She finds joy in simple pleasures, such as having someone read her books or tell her stories, and she displays a joyful attitude when she successfully masters new skills, like summoning her first stone with magic. Despite her growing happiness, she often retains a stern or serious expression, a lingering effect of her time as a slave. Her reactions can be quite perceptive; for instance, she is sensitive to serious situations and understands when to remain quiet and observant, such as when Zanoba and Rudeus are panicking over a broken figurine.

Julie’s primary motivation stems from her role as an apprentice, and her main purpose in the story is to become a doll artisan. She is purchased by Rudeus Greyrat and Zanoba Shirone specifically for this task, as Zanoba possesses an obsessive passion for dolls but lacks the fine motor skills and delicate touch to create them himself due to his immense strength. Julie is to be his hands, learning the craft so she can produce the figurines he so desperately desires. This gives her a clear and structured path forward, transforming her from a passive victim of circumstance into an active student with a trade.

Her relationships are central to her character development. The most significant bond she forms is with Zanoba Shirone, her owner and master. Despite the nature of their relationship beginning as one of master and slave, it quickly evolves into something far more familial. Zanoba acts as a kind, caring, and protective father figure or older brother to Julie. In turn, Julie is respectful and deeply fond of Zanoba, affectionately calling him Shishou, a term for a master or teacher. Zanoba himself reflects that taking responsibility for Julie was a turning point in his life, as she listened to him obediently and absorbed his teachings without complaint, making him grow attached to her and begin to see other humans in a new light.

Her relationship with Rudeus is more complex. He is one of her purchasers and her primary magic teacher. While he is kind and committed to her training, Julie also harbors a distinct fear of him. This fear stems from witnessing Rudeus’s capacity for harshness and violence, specifically when he imprisoned the beast girls Linia and Pursena and when he caused the immortal demon Badigadi to explode. Despite this fear, she diligently learns from him, and the two share a functional relationship as teacher and student.

Julie’s development is both emotional and practical. Over time, she blossoms from a silent, hopeless slave into a diligent and focused student who shows joy in her progress. Her skills grow significantly under the guidance of her two mentors. From Zanoba, she learns the theory, design, and aesthetic knowledge required to create dolls. From Rudeus, she receives intensive training in magic, specifically in Earth Magic, for which dwarves have a natural affinity. This training leads to one of her most notable abilities: chantless spellcasting. Rudeus, having no formal method to teach this rare skill, considered it an experiment. He would first have her cast spells with incantations and then make her sit silently, trying to conjure clumps of earth from her hands. After a month of this rigorous daily practice, Julie successfully learned to cast Earth Magic without incantations, a testament to her patience and talent. Her training from a young age also results in her possessing a high amount of mana, which continues to increase as she grows. Julie thus becomes a unique individual: a young dwarf girl, freed from slavery, who is being raised to be a master artisan and is a skilled mage capable of chantless spellcasting.
