Description
Phénicia is the French-language name of a character in Grendizer U, the 2024 reboot of the classic mecha anime; in the original Japanese version she is known as Grace Maria Fleed. She is a princess of the planet Fleed, called Euphor in the French localization, and the younger sister of the protagonist Duke Fleed, known in French as Actarus. She is fourteen years old when she is introduced. At the outset of her story she is living under house arrest on her home world, and she escapes in her personal spacecraft, fleeing enemy pursuit in order to travel to Earth and reunite with her brother, after which she joins the circle of people around him.
Phénicia initially behaves with the arrogance of a sheltered royal, looking down on Earth as a primitive and undeveloped planet because its inhabitants have not mastered interstellar travel. She makes no effort to hide this disdain, which quickly puts her at odds with Koji Kabuto, who refuses to accept her insults and sets out to demonstrate that Earth is not inferior to Fleed. Her attitude begins to change when the forces of Vega attack and she sees how humans confront danger and support one another. Through these experiences she gradually sheds her condescension and forms sincere bonds with the people around her.
Her role in the story grows beyond that of a runaway princess. Phénicia has the ability to see into the future, and she also carries latent potential as a Starker, the rare class of warrior qualified to pilot the powerful combat machines of her world. While exploring the ancient ruins on Ogami Island, she glimpses the future in the depths of the site, and Hikaru Makiba, the shrine maiden of the island, entrusts her with a power meant to protect the planet.
Her most important relationship is with her brother Duke, whom she crosses space to follow out of loyalty and family love, and their reunion anchors her place in the story. Her relationship with Koji develops from mutual provocation into mutual respect as they fight together. Through Hikaru she receives guidance and a new responsibility, and her growing trust in the Earthlings marks her development from a proud, dismissive girl into a more mature ally who accepts her part in defending the planet alongside her brother and his friends.
