Description
Prof. Yumi, whose full name is Gennosuke Yumi, is the director of the Photon Power Research Laboratory in the anime Grendizer U. He is the father of Sayaka Yumi and a former disciple of Dr. Juzo Kabuto, the grandfather of Koji Kabuto. In this reboot of the classic Grendizer story, he holds the position of laboratory director, a role that places him at the head of the human side's scientific defense efforts.

In terms of background, Yumi inherited the leadership of the Photon Power Research Laboratory after the era of Juzo Kabuto and oversees research into Photon Power energy, the development of super robots such as Mazinger Z, and the eventual construction of a new Mazinger machine. His position makes him a senior authority figure among the human defenders, responsible both for advancing the laboratory's weapons projects and for guiding the younger pilots connected to the Kabuto family.

His personality in this version of the story is cautious, pragmatic, and realistic. He is a scientist who holds that science itself carries no sin, and on that basis he is willing to apply the advanced technology brought by the alien prince Duke Fleed to upgrade Mazinger Z. At the same time, he does not give Duke his complete trust merely because Duke saved the Earth. Because Duke is an alien, Yumi regards him as an uncertain factor, and this guarded attitude puts him in opposition to Koji Kabuto, who trusts Duke without reservation. He is presented as a composed middle-aged scientist with glasses and a moustache.

His motivations center on protecting humanity through scientific means. He believes that the laboratory's research and the completion of its super-robot programs are the most reliable path to Earth's survival, and he is also driven by concern for his daughter Sayaka, who involves herself in dangerous frontline support work as an agent of the Kabuto Foundation.

Within the story, Yumi functions as the administrative and scientific head of the human defense effort. He directs the enhancement of existing machines using recovered alien technology and, together with Koji, works to activate the incomplete new Mazinger during a critical attack on the laboratory while its personnel are being struck down one after another. His suspicion of Duke also has direct consequences for the plot: after Duke secretly meets with Rubina, a member of the enemy Vega forces, Yumi orders Duke confined. It is only through the intervention of Genzo Umon, the laboratory's deputy director and Duke's adoptive father, that Duke is released to sortie in Grendizer.

His key relationships reflect his role as both a mentor figure and a voice of caution. With Sayaka, he is a devoted father whose responsibilities nevertheless keep him apart from much of her day-to-day activity. With Koji, he shares a bond shaped by his own history as a disciple of Koji's grandfather, but their working relationship is frequently strained by Koji's impulsive trust and willingness to take risks. With Duke, he maintains a relationship of guarded cooperation, accepting the value of Duke's combat power and technology while never fully setting aside his wariness. With Genzo Umon, his junior colleague, he shares the burden of running the laboratory, though their differing attitudes toward Duke become apparent when Genzo chooses to free the confined prince.

His development across the series centers on the tension between scientific pragmatism and human trust. His protectiveness and suspicion are eventually tested when he himself falls victim to the aliens he had been most wary of, left gravely injured and unconscious after an enemy assault, though he ultimately survives. The ordeal does not dramatically transform his worldview, but it underscores the limits of his caution and the necessity of the alliance with Duke that he had resisted.

His notable abilities lie in research and engineering rather than combat. He is a highly capable scientist able to analyze and integrate foreign technology, as demonstrated when he incorporates Fleed Star-derived technology into Mazinger Z's upgrades, and he has the organizational authority to direct large-scale development projects such as the new Mazinger. His expertise in Photon Power energy forms the scientific backbone of the laboratory's defense programs, and his decision-making in crisis situations, such as committing to the activation of the unfinished Mazinger, proves essential to the human side's survival.
