Description
Actarus, known in the original version as Duke Fleed, is the central protagonist of Grendizer U and the pilot of the powerful robot Grendizer. His true identity is that of the crown prince of the planet Fleed, a world that fell to ruin following a treacherous invasion by the Vegan Empire. The attack, orchestrated by a trusted ally named Cassado, resulted in the massacre of Fleed's royal family, including Actarus's parents. Consumed by rage and a desire for vengeance upon discovering this betrayal, Actarus attempted to pilot Grendizer to stop Cassado. However, his unstable emotions caused the robot to enter a berserk state, leading to unintended and devastating destruction across his home planet, including the apparent destruction of a craft carrying his fiancée, Princess Rubina. Overwhelmed by guilt and grief, and believing he had killed his beloved, Actarus fled into space with Grendizer, eventually crash-landing on Earth. The trauma of these events caused him to lose his memory.

Upon arriving on Earth, a memory-stricken Actarus was found and rescued by Koji Kabuto and Sayaka Yumi. Unable to recall his real name, he was given the Earth alias Daisuke Umon and lived a quiet life, working at a ranch. His peaceful existence was shattered when he witnessed Koji piloting the Mazinger Z, a sight that triggered the return of his suppressed memories. Recovering his past brought back the immense guilt and trauma of the destruction he had unwittingly caused on Fleed. His initial motivation is not to fight, but to atone. He plans to take Grendizer and fly it into the sun to destroy the robot and himself, ensuring that the Vegan Empire can never claim its power and that he can never again lose control and cause such a catastrophe. It is only Koji's intervention and the immediate threat of a Vegan invasion of Earth that forces Actarus to reconsider. He agrees to pilot Grendizer again, but only with a safeguard in place: he entrusts Koji with a ring that doubles as a remote bomb, giving his friend the means to kill him and stop Grendizer should he ever succumb to his berserker rage again.

Actarus is defined by a deep and tragic duality. On one hand, he is a kind, noble, and selfless individual, embodying the ideals of a Starker Knight. He is compassionate, forgiving, and places the well-being of others before his own, a trait that earns him the trust and admiration of his allies but also makes him vulnerable to betrayal. On the other hand, he is a deeply traumatized soul, perpetually haunted by the guilt of his past actions. The fear of losing control and repeating the devastation of Fleed is a constant and profound source of inner turmoil. This burden makes him initially reluctant to fight, and when he does engage in battle, he carries the weight of his past, determined to protect his adopted home of Earth as a form of redemption.

His key relationships are central to his character and development. His bond with Koji Kabuto is paramount; Koji becomes his most trusted ally and the failsafe against his own potential for destruction, offering unwavering support and a pragmatic counterpoint to Actarus's guilt. His past relationships are equally significant. He was engaged to Princess Rubina, whose apparent death he mourns, and her survival becomes a driving force in his quest to clear his name. Teronna, a fellow Starker Knight and his childhood friend, is torn between her loyalty to the Vegan Empire and her lingering feelings for him. His younger sister, Maria, is another survivor of Fleed's destruction, and their reunion reinforces that he is not alone in his loss. Actarus's development throughout the story is a journey from a guilt-ridden amnesiac and suicidal fugitive to a reluctant but determined defender of Earth. He learns to trust again, to accept help, and to channel his desire for atonement into the protection of his new home, while still wrestling with the fear of the immense and dangerous power he wields.

As a Starker Knight, Actarus possesses enhanced physical abilities and is a highly skilled pilot and swordsman, trained from childhood. He can generate a protective pilot suit through an ability known as the Starker Flash. As the pilot of Grendizer, he commands a robot of immense power, capable of planet-level destruction, especially when in its uncontrollable berserk state. Grendizer is equipped with a variety of powerful weapons, including the Space Thunder, which unleashes devastating electrical discharges, the Double Harken blades, the Screw Crusher Punch, and the Anti-Gravity Storm, which manipulates gravitational forces. The robot can also combine with various support vehicles called Spazers to enhance its combat capabilities in different environments, such as the Double Spazer, Drill Spazer, and Marine Spazer.
