Description
Mutsuko Sakura is the heroine of Major 2nd and a classmate of the protagonist, Daigo Shigeno. She has known Daigo since they attended the same kindergarten, though they were placed in the same homeroom for the first time in sixth grade. By the time she enters Fuurin Junior High, she has become the vice-captain of the school’s baseball club. She is physically described as having medium-length black hair with straight bangs and blue or green eyes, and she stands at 165 centimeters tall.
Personality-wise, Mutsuko is caring and quietly observant, often showing concern for Daigo from a young age. She harbors a strong but mostly unspoken romantic crush on him, a fact that becomes apparent to the other members of the Fuurin baseball team, as well as to characters like Kaoru and Izumi. She can be somewhat shy and reserved, but she also possesses a tsundere streak and a surprising ability to negotiate when the situation calls for it. Her dedication to Daigo and to the team is one of her defining traits, and she is widely regarded as a supportive and reliable presence.
Her primary motivation stems from her affection for Daigo and her desire to see him succeed, especially since he struggles to live up to the extraordinary baseball legacy of his father. She wants to help him and the team achieve their goals, and this drives her to improve her own baseball skills. She is also motivated by a genuine love for the sport and a sense of responsibility as vice-captain.
In the story, Mutsuko functions as both a love interest and a key supporting player on the baseball team. She serves as an emotional anchor for Daigo and often cheers him on from the sidelines or directly on the field. Her role becomes more prominent in the Fuurin Middle Arc, where she takes on the position of pitcher and vice-captain, helping to lead a team that is rebuilding after internal turmoil.
Her most significant relationship is with Daigo Shigeno, whom she has quietly admired since childhood. The other members of the Fuurin baseball club, especially the upperclassmen and her fellow teammates, also form important bonds with her. She interacts with Daigo’s family and friends, including Kaoru and Izumi, who are aware of her feelings.
Throughout the series, Mutsuko develops from a shy classmate with a secret crush into a confident and capable player. She gains experience as an outfielder during her time with the Mifune Little league and later transitions into a pitcher for Fuurin Middle School. Her growth is tied to her increasing willingness to step up and take on leadership responsibilities, as well as her ability to handle the pressures of competitive baseball.
Mutsuko is a right-handed batter and right-handed thrower. She has a strong sense for the game, which allows her to contribute effectively both in the outfield and on the pitcher’s mound. Her athleticism and quick learning enable her to adapt to new positions, and her presence as vice-captain gives her a chance to guide and support her teammates both strategically and emotionally.
