Description
Axel is the central protagonist of the anime Lazarus, a young man of Japanese-Brazilian heritage who is 23 years old. His early life was spent in the favelas of Brazil, an upbringing that significantly shaped his physical capabilities and resourcefulness. Prior to the main events of the story, Axel was incarcerated, originally serving a minor three-year sentence for an unspecified crime. However, due to a persistent and self-described bad habit of escaping from custody, his sentence was repeatedly doubled, eventually accumulating to a staggering total of 888 years.

Physically, Axel is incredibly agile and acrobatic, moving like a dancer and fighting with a style reminiscent of capoeira, reflecting his Brazilian roots. He is an expert in parkour and hand-to-hand combat, skills he uses to evade armed guards and other threats with remarkable ease. His abilities boarder on the superhuman, allowing him to survive injuries and encounters that would be fatal for an ordinary person. He is also highly intelligent and resourceful, capable of setting traps for his enemies and tracking down elusive targets.

In terms of personality, Axel presents a charismatic and easygoing exterior, often displaying a fearless and thrill-seeking nature that makes him willing to jump from buildings or joke with dangerous adversaries. This laid-back demeanor, however, masks a deep-seated loneliness and a past marked by solitude. He has a strong desire for freedom and is constantly seeking his next adrenaline rush, a need that kept him perpetually on the run from authority.

Axel's primary motivation in the story is self-preservation and the pursuit of freedom. He was scouted for the elite task force known as Lazarus while in prison but resisted joining. He was ultimately tricked and forcibly conscripted by another member, Christine, who placed a restraint bracelet on him that could cause lethal harm if he attempted to desert. His mission as part of the task force is to locate the missing scientist Dr. Skinner, who created a dangerous painkilling drug called Hapna. It was later revealed that everyone who has taken the drug will die within a set timeframe. Axel himself took Hapna while in prison, though unlike most users, he felt immense pain rather than pleasure, and he was the sole survivor of the clinical trials conducted inside the prison. This personal stake gives him a powerful incentive to find Dr. Skinner and obtain a cure to save his own life.

Key to Axel's story is his relationship with his teammate Christine. Their dynamic begins with her betraying him to force his recruitment, but it evolves into a deep and complex bond over the course of their mission. They share playful banter and a growing mutual understanding, acting as a support system for one another. Axel saves Christine's life on multiple occasions, and she in turn saves him when he is critically wounded. In a pivotal moment, believing they might never see each other again, Christine kisses the hospitalized Axel. However, this gesture is interpreted less as a definitive romantic declaration and more as an expression of deep admiration, care, and the profound value she places on their connection, which is rooted in mutual respect rather than a traditional romance.

Throughout the story, Axel undergoes some development, though critics have noted that his character remains somewhat enigmatic and lacking in deep exploration. He demonstrates a clear, if understated, care for his fellow team members and is willing to disobey orders to rescue them, showing he is not just a thrill-seeking loner but someone capable of forming meaningful, if not traditionally expressed, attachments. He suffers severe injuries, including being impaled by a rival named Soryu, but survives and prepares for a rematch, highlighting his resilience. Ultimately, Axel remains a figure defined by his exceptional physical prowess and his internal conflict between a desire for personal freedom and the unexpected responsibilities and bonds that come with being part of the Lazarus team.
