Description
Doug, whose full name is Douglas Hadine, is a 24-year-old operative from Nigeria who serves as a central figure in the special investigative team Lazarus. Before joining the team, Doug was a brilliant student of physics at Stanford University, where his exceptional intelligence set him apart. His academic career came to an abrupt end, however, when he was expelled for punching the university dean. This violent outburst was a direct response to the dean making a racist remark, falsely claiming that a black man could never become a great scientist or win the Nobel Prize. Prior to his expulsion, Doug worked as a university researcher alongside his mentor, Professor Claude, for whom he harbors deep respect.
In terms of personality, Doug is widely recognized as the brains of the Lazarus team. He is a perfectionist and highly methodical, often maintaining a calm, cool, and collected demeanor even when provoked by his more impulsive teammates like Axel and Chris. Despite his stoic and straight-laced exterior, Doug possesses a warm heart and a fiercely passionate,热血, or hot-blooded, spirit within. He is not above displaying moments of goofiness, such as being a notoriously terrible dancer, and has shown visible disgust at others' questionable social media content. Although he appears mature and dresses like an adult, he is actually only 23 years old, leading fellow operative Chris to mistakenly assume he was around 40.
Doug's motivations are notably more principled than some of his colleagues. While the rest of the team is primarily interested in finding the missing scientist Dr. Skinner to save themselves from the deadly effects of the Hapna drug and to have their criminal records erased, Doug is distinguished as the only believer who is truly committed to bringing Skinner to justice and uncovering the reasons behind his plan to destroy humanity. He once held great respect for Dr. Skinner. His backstory also includes a key event where he was one of only five survivors of an accidental poison release at an airport, an incident that granted him and the other future Lazarus members a resistance to Hapna's toxic effects.
Within the team's dynamic, Doug acts as the de facto field leader, often directing the others during missions. His relationship with the protagonist, Axel, is characterized by teeth-clenched teamwork; while willing to work together for the mission's success, Doug holds a low opinion of Axel's reckless and thrill-seeking nature. He shares a close working relationship with Eleina, the team's elite hacker, and the two frequently pair up to pursue leads, such as their journey to Pakistan to find an informant known as Popcorn Wizard. Doug's loyalty to his mentor, Professor Claude, provides a more personal dimension to his role when the team is tasked with finding him.
Throughout the story, Doug demonstrates significant physical and mental fortitude. Despite being a Badass Bookworm whose background is in physics, he is also a Genius Bruiser skilled in gun fu, with a particular preference for a heavy-duty revolver, an archaic weapon in a futuristic age. He is remarkably resilient, having survived being struck in the head with a rifle butt, hit by a moving vehicle, and sending a car full of enemy agents off a cliff before losing consciousness. At one point in the narrative, Doug is captured by INSCOM agents working for the antagonist Schneider but is eventually freed with the help of his allies. His notable abilities include his strategic mind, his expertise in physics, and his prowess in tactical combat, all of which make him an indispensable asset to the Lazarus team.
