Description
Devola is a model of android who appears in the anime NieR:Automata Ver 1.1a, where she serves as a supporting character alongside her twin sister, Popola. As the older of the two sisters, Devola has a long and painful history that predates the main events of the story. Her origins lie in the era of Project Gestalt, a now-failed initiative intended to save humanity. Devola and Popola were originally created as overseers for this project, tasked with managing the world and its Replicants for thousands of years. When the project failed, resulting in the extinction of humanity, all androids of the Devola and Popola models were held responsible for this catastrophic outcome. As punishment and as the last surviving pair of their kind, Devola and Popola were reprogrammed to bear a permanent, inescapable sense of guilt, forcing them to spend their existence trying to atone for a crime that was not entirely their fault.

Personality-wise, Devola is characterized as being more energetic and outspoken than her quieter, more reserved sister, Popola. Despite the immense burden of guilt they both carry, Devola often appears as the more proactive of the two. However, this does not mean she is unaffected by their tragic fate. While Popola tends to accept their punishment stoically, Devola is more openly aware of the unfairness of their eternal condemnation, recognizing that they do not deserve to be treated as pariahs forever. Her primary and most defining motivation is her love for her sister and her desperate desire to atone. She dedicates herself to aiding other androids in the hope of finally making amends for the sins of her model line, believing that only through self-sacrifice can she and Popola earn any measure of redemption.

In the story of the anime, Devola and Popola are initially found working at the Resistance Camp, often seen in the background performing menial tasks and acting as vendors who provide supplies and repairs to YoRHa androids like 2B and 9S. They are treated as outcasts by the other resistance members, a reflection of the collective blame placed on their model series for humanity's downfall. Their key relationships are limited, as they have only each other for support in a world that shuns them. Their connection to 2B and 9S is largely professional, though they provide crucial assistance. Devola's most significant relationships are, of course, with her twin sister Popola, to whom she is utterly devoted, and with the legacy of her original models, whose failure she is compelled to rectify.

Development is a central theme for Devola. Her arc is one of tragic, forced redemption. Throughout the series, she and Popola live with the constant emotional weight of their programming, feeling that they must sacrifice themselves for any chance of being forgiven. In the final episodes, when the remaining characters move to assault the Tower, Devola and Popola make their defining stand. They assist 9S by fighting off waves of machine lifeforms, serving as a distraction to buy him time to enter the structure. This act of self-sacrifice is the culmination of their programming and their personal desire to do some good. Both sisters are ultimately infected with the Logic Virus and sustain fatal wounds. In her final moments, a dying Devola asks A2 if they managed to do some good. After receiving a reassuring answer, A2 grants her a merciful death, bringing her long and sorrowful existence to an end.

Devola possesses several notable abilities. As an android, she has enhanced physical strength and durability. She is proficient in combat, capable of annihilating machine lifeforms with a melee weapon. She also has advanced technical and medical knowledge, with her model being specifically designed for maintenance and repair, including the ability to work on advanced YoRHa units. In the distant past, the original Devola model possessed powerful magical capabilities, having lent a fraction of their power to create the Sealed Verses; they were said to be far more powerful than Grimoire Weiss. However, by the time period of the anime, the Devola and Popola units have lost access to these higher levels of magic and primarily rely on physical combat.
