Description
Hedin Selland is an elf and a high-ranking executive of the Freya Familia in the labyrinth city of Orario. Before becoming an adventurer, he was the king of the White Elves on the island of Hjaðningavíg, a place torn by constant warfare with the Black Elves. He was a prodigious fighter even before receiving a falna, the blessing of a god that grants divine power, due to the incessant battles on his island.
At first glance, Hedin presents the image of a calm and analytical individual. He possesses white, almost translucent skin, long golden hair, coral eyes, and is known to wear glasses, an uncommon accessory for an adventurer. His personality is characterized by a sharp intellect and a profound intolerance for incompetence and inefficiency. He often adopts a haughty demeanor, readily insulting others for their perceived foolishness and often acting as the voice of reason among the more impulsive executives of his familia. Despite this composed exterior, he harbors a more aggressive and barbaric side. This true nature emerges when he is enraged, particularly by heinous acts or insults against his goddess, Freya, at which point his language becomes coarse and his actions merciless.
Hedin is defined by his unwavering loyalty to Freya, yet his motivations are complex. He is driven by a wish to obtain her love for himself, viewing other members of the familia as rivals. He is also ambitious, seeing the captain, Ottar, as a goal to overcome in his quest to become the most powerful warrior in the familia. However, his loyalty is not blind. He is one of the few who understands Freya's deepest desire, not as a worshipped goddess, but as an ordinary woman seeking genuine love and freedom. This understanding ultimately leads him to betray the Freya Familia during the great war game against the Hestia Familia, orchestrating events from within to ensure Freya's true salvation rather than her continued existence as an untouchable deity.
His role in the story becomes especially prominent when he is tasked with transforming Bell Cranel into a gentleman for a date with Syr Flover, one of Freya's personas. This begins a reluctant but impactful master-student relationship. Hedin subjects Bell to days of hellish training, drilling him in etiquette, combat, and social graces with brutal efficiency, often kicking him for every mistake. Though Bell initially calls him a cruel and ruthless elf, he comes to deeply respect Hedin as his master. When Freya later uses her divine power to charm the entire city and claim Bell as her own, Hedin becomes Bell's battle instructor, pushing him to his absolute limits under the guise of serving the goddess while secretly preparing him for the coming conflict.
Throughout the war game, Hedin's true plan unfolds. He methodically sabotages the Freya Familia's efforts, defeating their healers and, alongside his long-time rival and fellow executive Hogni, turns the tide of the battle in favor of the Hestia Familia. In the final confrontation, he uses his magic to support Bell, Ottar, and the other allies, culminating in him transferring all his remaining magical power to Bell for the decisive strike against Ottar. After the conflict, he accepts the punishment from his familia for his betrayal but continues to watch over Bell and the Hestia Familia from the shadows.
As a Level 6 adventurer, Hedin is one of the most powerful individuals in Orario. He is exceptionally skilled as a magic swordsman, combining high-level melee combat with devastating magic. He has the largest magical energy reserve of any adventurer in the city. He is also a renowned strategist, adept at leading troops and commanding battles. His primary form of attack is powerful lightning magic. His known spells include Caulus Hildr, which fires a great number of lightning bolts over a range exceeding 500 meters, and Laurus Hildr, a spell that can bestow a powerful blessing that enhances an ally's speed and strength at the cost of exhausting his own magic. In close combat, he wields a longsword named Dizaria, which can also serve as a magic staff. Hedin's contributions to the fifth season arc solidify him not just as a formidable executive, but as a key strategist whose hidden motives and pivotal betrayal are instrumental in resolving the central conflict.
