Description
The name Gulliver in the context of the anime "Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? V" refers not to a single individual but to a set of four characters known collectively as the Gulliver Brothers. These four pallum adventurers are Alfrigg, Dvalinn, Berling, and Grer Gulliver. They serve as high-ranking executives within the Freya Familia, the most powerful faction in the city of Orario, and are all recognized as first-class adventurers at Level 5.
The brothers are quadruplets who share identical features, typically wearing sand-colored full-face helmets and matching armor, making them indistinguishable at a glance. The only reliable way to tell them apart is by the unique colors of their eyes: Alfrigg has light blue eyes, Dvalinn has yellow, Berling has green, and Grer has red. Small cloth accents on their armor correspond to these same colors, providing another subtle distinction.
The personalities of the Gulliver Brothers are defined first and foremost by their absolute and unwavering loyalty to their goddess, Freya. They view her with near-religious devotion and will carry out any order she issues without question. This fierce loyalty, however, breeds a powerful jealousy; they desire Freya's love exclusively for themselves and are openly hostile toward other members of their own familia, viewing them as rivals and obstacles. They maintain a strained relationship of mutual hatred with many of their comrades. This jealousy extends to Bell Cranel, who receives a tremendous amount of Freya's personal attention and affection, leading the brothers to resent him, though they develop a begrudging respect for his abilities as a warrior after training with him.
An unusual aspect of their shared personality is their form of communication. The brothers are so deeply connected that they can communicate their will to one another without hesitation and speak in a manner that makes it seem like a single person is talking to themselves. This seamless connection is a cornerstone of their identity. Despite their similarities, Alfrigg considers himself the older brother and tries to keep his siblings in line. While they do not respect his authority and frequently ignore him, they are all intensely afraid of his hidden, intensely aggressive side, which emerges only when he is sufficiently provoked. As former master craftsmen and jewelers of legendary skill, they were once famous artisans before becoming adventurers. Their origin story with Freya is the source of their devotion; after they created a stunning necklace for her, their dwarven master revealed that Freya had slept with him as payment for their release. Enraged, the brothers killed the dwarf and swore their eternal loyalty to Freya, viewing her sacrifice as an act of love for them.
In the story, particularly during the events of the fifth season, the Gulliver Brothers serve as major antagonists and formidable obstacles for the Hestia Familia and its allied factions. Their primary role is as elite enforcers for Freya, tasked with executing her will against her enemies. Their incredible combat prowess makes them a significant threat. The core of their strength lies in their legendary teamwork, widely considered the best in the entire city of Orario. When fighting together in perfect synchronization, their collective ability is said to be equal to that of a Level 6 adventurer, allowing them to overcome opponents of higher individual levels. Each brother also specializes in a distinct analytical role during combat: Grer possesses superb observation skills for gauging enemy habits and weaknesses, Berling excels at searching for hidden threats and ambushes, Dvalinn is proficient in detecting and analyzing the magic of opponents, and Alfrigg utilizes superior calculation and decision-making skills to direct their combined efforts.
Beyond this specialized teamwork, each brother possesses the immense strength, speed, and durability expected of a Level 5 adventurer. Their raw power is such that they can generate shockwaves felt across large structures and have defeated entire armies of thousands, including multiple Level 2 and Level 3 soldiers, without showing fatigue. Their physical capabilities allow them to move and react at speeds that can intercept attacks from other first-class adventurers and remain standing even after suffering grievous wounds that would incapacitate most others. Their shared backstory as craftsmen also remains a minor part of their identity, as they were capable of creating high-quality jewelry. Over the course of their time as adventurers, they have ranked up at an exceptionally fast pace, achieving Level 5 after the Great Feud, an event where they defeated four powerful Spirit Soldiers. Their rivalry with the Loki Familia is also notable; they have fought against its members before and bear a specific dislike for the pallum captain, Finn Deimne.
