Description
Ottar is the captain of the Freya Familia and is recognized throughout Orario as the strongest adventurer in the city, a reputation reflected in his title of King and in his status as the only Level 7 adventurer known at the time the story begins. He is a Boaz, a humanoid beast race with boar-like features, and his long career as an adventurer places him among the few still-active fighters who once clashed with the legendary Zeus and Hera Familias, the dominant powers of an earlier generation.
In appearance, Ottar is a tall and heavily muscular man with dark skin, rust-colored hair and eyes, and a pair of boar ears. He wears simple, practical combat clothing, typically a dark blue sleeveless top with a red chest panel and gray pants, and his imposing build makes him tower over most people he meets.
Ottar's personality is defined by quiet discipline. He is taciturn and stoic, a warrior first and last, who rarely speaks more than necessary and is blunt but honest when he does speak. He pursues strength relentlessly and is never satisfied with his own power, even though he is already called the strongest. His greatest loyalty is to the goddess Freya; he follows her orders without question, becomes enraged if anyone insults her, and yet feels no jealousy toward her interest in Bell Cranel. Despite his fearsome reputation, he can show consideration for others, as when he used an elixir to help the adventurer Mikoto after she exhausted herself. He also holds a firm belief that adventurers only grow by taking on real challenges, and that they would never break out of their shells if they avoided danger, a view that puts him at odds with more cautious figures who prefer to protect the inexperienced.
Ottar's motivation is twofold: to serve Freya and to keep pushing himself beyond his current limits. In combat, he relies on overwhelming physical strength, endurance, and speed refined through long experience in the Dungeon, and he carries an exclusive greatsword called Tyrant, forged by the Goibniu Familia from the drop item Udeus's Black Sword, a weapon valued at 410 million valis that is said to surpass the Great Twin Blades. He also possesses a magic spell that, when chanted, beastifies his body and grants an extremely high boost to all his abilities during battle, at the cost of rapidly draining his stamina and mental strength; while the effect lasts, he temporarily gains development abilities such as healing power and mind healing, and all of his acquired development abilities are enhanced.
In the fifth season of the anime, Ottar becomes a central figure in the conflict surrounding Freya's obsessive desire for Bell Cranel. As the captain of the familia carrying out Freya's will, he stands as both a nearly insurmountable obstacle for Bell and a harsh teacher whose strength forces Bell to grow. His presence in the story illustrates the enormous gap between an ordinary adventurer and the summit of Orario's power, and although he opposes Bell, he does so as a loyal warrior carrying out his goddess's orders rather than out of cruelty. Through these encounters, his devotion is shown to be absolute, and his position as the strongest expresses both his power and the isolation that comes with a life lived entirely in service to another's desires.
