Description
Hephaestus is the head deity of the Hephaestus Familia, one of the most prominent and respected blacksmithing factions in the city of Orario. As the Goddess of Smithing, she runs a massive organization known for producing the highest quality weapons and armor available to adventurers. Her appearance is distinctive, with short red hair reaching her neck and sharp facial features. She has crimson eyes, but her right eye is always concealed beneath an eyepatch due to a severe defect. This deformity is so unsettling that almost everyone who sees it recoils in horror, though the goddess Hestia and the smith Welf Crozzo are notable exceptions.

In terms of personality, Hephaestus is typically strict, hardworking, and composed. She carries herself with a serious and professional demeanor, especially when matters of importance or her Familia's reputation are at stake. As the leader of a premier brand, she is highly concerned with the quality of her Familia's output, refusing to craft lower-class weapons because it would tarnish their name. Despite her usually serene exterior, she harbors deep insecurities related to her hidden eye, which has led her to belittle her own charm and resign herself to the idea of never finding a partner. However, she possesses a surprisingly emotional and flustered side when it comes to romance, as seen in her interactions with Welf.

Her motivations are largely tied to her craft and her Familia. She seeks to maintain the highest standards of smithing and supports the growth of talented artisans under her care. Her role in the story is often that of a supportive ally, particularly to her close friend, Hestia. Despite their contrasting natures, Hephaestus frequently lends money and resources to the much smaller and poorer Hestia Familia. Her most significant contribution is personally forging the Hestia Knife, a powerful living weapon infused with Hestia's falna, specifically for Bell Cranel to help him grow stronger. She also plays a crucial role in the development of Welf Crozzo, initially challenging his refusal to create magic swords and later becoming emotionally invested in his growth as a smith.

Key relationships define much of Hephaestus's character. Her bond with Hestia is particularly strong, dating back to their time in Heaven, where Hestia was the only deity who did not shun her for her deformity. While Hephaestus often grows frustrated with Hestia's lazy tendencies, she remains a steadfast and caring friend. Her relationship with Welf Crozzo is another cornerstone of her character. Recognizing his latent talent, she initially acts as a stern mentor, but her feelings evolve dramatically when Welf sees her hidden eye without fear or disgust. This leads to a deep romantic affection for him, and she becomes uncharacteristically giddy and open about her feelings, much to the amusement of her Familia's captain. Her Familia's captain, Tsubaki Collbrande, is her primary confidante, the one to whom she freely gushes about her love for Welf.

Hephaestus undergoes notable development, primarily concerning her personal insecurities. For a long time, she resigned herself to solitude, believing her deformity made her unlovable. Welf's unwavering acceptance directly challenges this complex, allowing her to embrace a more vulnerable, romantic side of herself that she had long suppressed. This development softens her strict exterior and reveals a more complete picture of her character beyond just being a diligent craftswoman.

As a goddess, Hephaestus possesses several notable abilities, even with her divine arcanum sealed while in the mortal world. She is a master smith of unparalleled skill, capable of forging legendary items like the living Hestia Knife using only her divine craftsmanship. The Spanish wiki entry also references her control over divine flames limited specifically to smithing, as well as supernatural perception that allows her to immediately discern when a mortal is lying. Additionally, she retains the ability to create a Divine Mirror, which lets her view any location in the Lower World. These abilities, combined with her leadership and craftsmanship, solidify her position as one of the most influential and respected gods in Orario.
