Description
The Flatwoods Monster in DAN DA DAN is an extraterrestrial being and an associate of the Serpoian aliens, first appearing as an antagonist in the early stages of the story. This creature is a creative reinterpretation of the famous cryptid from the 1952 Flatwoods, West Virginia sighting, reimagined with a distinctly Japanese aesthetic.

The being possesses a towering and imposing physical presence, standing over three meters tall with a massive, stocky build that closely resembles that of a sumo wrestler. Its body is a surreal, mechanical construct rather than biological tissue, with visible joints that move like a puppet and a hollow interior from which black mist escapes when damaged. Its head is framed by a large, pointed hood reminiscent of the spade-shaped head from the original legend, and its face features wide eyes and a rectangular mouth. True to its sumo motif, its only attire is a tsuna, the traditional rope belt worn by a yokozuna champion.

In terms of personality and motivation, the Flatwoods Monster operates with a singular, aggressive purpose: to steal the genitalia of the protagonists, Momo Ayase and Ken Okarun, seemingly as a mercenary or obedient agent acting on behalf of the Serpoians. Its behavior is erratic and violent; it is known to shout hysterically during battle and attack with unrelenting force. Despite its monstrous nature, it adheres to an unusual and exploitable code of honor based on sumo wrestling, as it fights using only stomps and open-palm strikes and will begin to disintegrate if its hands touch the ground, treating this as a form of defeat.

The creature plays a crucial role in the Turbo-Granny Arc, serving as a significant threat that forces the main duo to learn to work together in combat. Its appearance occurs after Momo temporarily removes a protective Shinto talisman from her home, creating an empty space barrier that allows the alien to invade. During the ensuing battle, it creates an impenetrable wall to trap Momo and Okarun inside the house, releasing a noxious black mist from its mouth that causes nosebleeds and physical distress, a direct nod to the real-life reports of a foul odor and sickness associated with the original cryptid.

The fight is instrumental in Okarun's development, as it marks his first time consciously triggering the powers he inherited from Turbo Granny to fight back. A key relationship is formed between the creature and the Serpoians, as it is explicitly named as their associate and shares their bizarre fixation on harvesting human genitalia.

The character shows notable development during its sole major battle, revealing hidden abilities when pushed to its limits. After Okarun destroys one of its legs, the Flatwoods Monster is forced to touch the ground with its palm, causing its arm to begin disintegrating. To circumvent this fatal weakness, the creature demonstrates a grotesque ability to rapidly generate a new pair of legs from its back or neck to keep itself upright and continue fighting. Its notable abilities include immense physical strength capable of shattering the ground and destroying buildings with simple stomps, the generation of solid barriers, the emission of toxic black mist, and this unique leg regeneration. Ultimately, its defeat is achieved through strategy rather than brute force when Momo manages to reactivate the protective talisman, causing the alien to be confined within its own barrier and completely burned to ash.
