Maura Aberald, also known as Mauro Abelard, is a central character who was alone and homeless during childhood until adopted by Leon Aurenche. The adoption served to develop Shadowverse skills for a future sacrifice to save the world from the Tree of Woe.

This character first appears as an opponent in the semi-finals of a national Shadowverse tournament, displaying prior knowledge of Hiro and his father. It is later revealed the character was groomed as one of the chosen ones, aware of the Tree of Woe's danger before others.

During the quest for Mythical Cards, the character acquires one but finds it blocked by internal doubts about the sacrificial role. A battle with Luca leads to the card's awakening after confessing a strong desire to live. The battle is interrupted when Empty Shadows possess the character, requiring rescue by Hiro and Luca. After this, the character entrusts Hiro with Prominence Fusion.

When the Tree of Woe opens and traps people in a dream world, the character finds themselves in an idealized reality living happily as Leon's protégé. Recognizing the illusion as false and guided by Asagi, they confront the spirit of Eris to return to reality, accepting the need to find a personal reason to live.

The character later joins the fight against Empty Shadows and supports Hiro against Leon. After a subsequent national tournament, they embark on a journey to understand the world. Over three years, occasional contact is maintained with Marguerite Valios, and awareness is shown regarding a situation involving Arc.

During a visit to Nekome City, a meeting occurs with Marguerite and Ein, who reveal they have been observing the stay due to ambiguous trust. Later, at Leon's grave, the character is contacted by companions and Marguerite to help reclaim Mythical Cards during an invasion. An ambush by empowered Shades places the character in peril, but rescue comes from Leon using a Genesis Artifact. Leon apologizes for past manipulation and warns of Nexus. The character shows resentment but accepts the apologies.

Following the loss of the Mythical Cards and the revival of the Tree of Woe, the character reunites with old friends and places faith in Light Tenryu. After the Tree's defeat, they return to travels but visit Marguerite to deliver a message from Leon suggesting she take a break from her CEO position, though she declines.

The character is also depicted seeking a "Book of Forgotten Folktales" based on local legends in Nekome City, instructed by an unknown and cruel master who aims to demoralize and prevent freedom. Despite a connection to Leon in the anime, the master in this quest is likely a different individual.

Personality is initially friendly but becomes sadistic during Shadowverse battles, showing no mercy and enjoying opponents' struggles. A serious dilemma exists due to being raised for sacrifice, leading to questioning the desire to live. After rescue from the Empty Shadows, a new perspective on life is found with comrades.

Physical appearance includes green hair tied in a ponytail with some black hair at the back, a necklace with four green gems and one red gem, a yellow tunic, short pants, brown boots, a dark red cheek tattoo, and purple eyes when open.

A Havencraft deck is used, focused on Countdown amulets. The battle style starts slow to create a false sense of security before assaulting opponents mercilessly. The deck accelerates Countdowns, summons powerful followers, and restores defense. The primary strategy uses God of Curses to reduce the opponent's maximum defense each turn. When possessed by Shadows, the deck changes to include powerful instrument cards that allow leader attacks and damage reduction, alongside cards that clear the opponent's board and fill the field with strong followers.
