Description
Kamil is a young boy from the lower city of Ehrenfest, born to the soldier Gunther and the sewist Effa as their third child and youngest son, making him the younger brother of Tuuli and Myne. He enters the world just before a pivotal and traumatic event for his family: the attack on his sister Myne by the noble Count Bindewald, an incident that ultimately leads to Myne being adopted into nobility and becoming Rozemyne. Because he is born at this tumultuous time, Kamil has no living memories of his biological sister and grows up largely unaware of her existence or their true relationship.

As a child, Kamil is presented as bright and observant, displaying a keen interest in the books, toys, and karuta card games that are brought to his family home by the merchant Lutz. Unknown to him, these cherished items were actually crafted in the workshop of Lady Rozemyne, and his fondness for them hints at an inherited passion he does not yet understand. His parents, still wary of nobles and bound by the painful secrets surrounding Myne's supposed death, keep the truth from him, telling him only that the gifts come from Lady Rozemyne out of sympathy for his family's loss. This silence shrouds his household, and his parents rarely, if ever, speak of their eldest daughter in his presence, leaving Kamil with little curiosity about a sister he has no memory of.

Seeking companionship and an outlet for his enthusiasm, Kamil often ventures into the forest, where he forages and secretly plays with Dirk and Konrad, two orphans from the temple. With them, he can enthusiastically discuss his beloved books and games, free from the restrictions his parents have placed on talking about the noble gifts. In these play sessions, he demonstrates a competitive spirit, finding Dirk to be a formidable opponent in karuta while easily besting Konrad, though he notes with some frustration as Konrad's skills improve over time. His dedication to the game becomes so great that he practices often with his mother, Effa, and his older sister, Tuuli, whenever she visits.

Kamil's role in the story becomes more defined as he approaches the age of baptism, particularly concerning his future career. During a visit to the Gilberta Company with Tuuli, he plays karuta with the merchant children Renate and Knut. His skill, being evenly matched with Renate, leads her to declare he should join the company so she could eventually achieve a perfect win rate against him. While the merchant Otto enthusiastically supports this idea, Benno interjects, arguing that Kamil's clear love for books and toys makes him far better suited to the Plantin Company, which handles printing. Kamil himself is drawn to this latter path, as it would allow him to see how the books he loves are made in the Rozemyne Workshop and to work alongside Lutz, Dirk, and Konrad. When he confidently announces his wish to become a merchant and join the Plantin Company to spread books far and wide, his parents react with visible shock and tears, a reaction that bewilders Kamil but ultimately ends with their tearful approval, as they are likely reminded of the dreams of the daughter they lost to the noble world.

His development is marked by a steady, if unknowing, path toward the legacy of his absent sister. Eager to prepare for his chosen life, he readily accepts Lutz's offer to train him in the ways of a merchant, and he secures a guarantee of employment from Benno even before his baptism. Being described as a smart child, his natural curiosity and intelligence are fostered by the very environment of books and toys that Rozemyne created, drawing him inexorably toward her sphere of influence without his conscious knowledge. At his spring baptism ceremony, he finally sees Lady Rozemyne, the archduke's adopted daughter, in person. The sight of a woman who has nearly grown to adulthood surprises him, as he had been told she was supposed to be extremely small, marking a quiet moment of disconnect between the stories of his past and the reality before him. While he possesses no magical or combat abilities, his notable traits are his sharp mind, his passionate love for literature and games, and his determination to work in the printing industry, all of which mirror the foundational traits of his biological sister and set the stage for his own future contributions.
