Description
Kensei Kuroto is the leader of the Seven Shining Stars, a resistance group operating against the Neo-Britannian Empire in the northern region of Japan. He is a veteran soldier with a rugged and imposing presence, characterized by his short, dark gray hair and a prominent scar that runs across his forehead and over his left eye, a mark of his many years of experience in battle.

Kensei possesses a personality defined by directness, honesty, and unwavering loyalty. He is a man of principle who inspires deep respect and trust among his subordinates, who see him as a charismatic and dependable commander. On the battlefield, he is a gifted strategist who is capable of keeping a cool head in tense situations, often coordinating operations from a mobile command vehicle rather than on the front lines. Despite his serious and austere demeanor as a leader, he has a more reserved and awkward side in his family life. He can be somewhat old-fashioned, using outdated expressions that bemuse his daughter, yet his deep-seated care and affection for those close to him are evident in his actions.

Before leading the Seven Shining Stars, Kensei was a member of the Japan Liberation Front and later served as a captain of the personal guard for Jugo Sumeragi, the governor of the Hokkaido Block. This former position gave him a personal connection to Sakuya Sumeragi, Jugo's daughter. At the beginning of the story, he is held prisoner in a Neo-Britannian labor camp in Abashiri, awaiting execution. He is freed thanks to the intervention of Rozé, who is secretly Sakuya Sumeragi, and upon learning her true identity, his loyalty to the Sumeragi family compels him to rejoin the fight. He becomes one of the few people who know that Rozé is actually Sakuya, and he works to protect her secret while aiding her mission to rescue a double named Sakura who is being held as a hostage in her place.

In his role as a rebel leader, Kensei prefers to act as a military strategist, coordinating his team's movements with precision and effectiveness. While he is a highly skilled Knightmare Frame pilot, said to be unmatched in his mastery of the lance, he typically commands his forces from a headquarters or command vehicle to oversee the broader tactical situation. His leadership is crucial in uniting his forces with other resistance groups, such as the Eastern Wind Brigade and the North Wolf Army, for major operations like the assault on the Damocles fortress.

A key relationship in his life is with Haruka Rutaka, who is an ace pilot for the Seven Shining Stars. It is revealed late in the story that Haruka is his biological daughter, a discovery that gives new emotional depth to their previous interactions. His development throughout the narrative involves reconciling his roles as a principled commander and a caring, if awkward, father. Following the fall of the main antagonist, Noland von Lüneberg, and the dissolution of the Seven Shining Stars, Kensei takes Haruka to the grave of his wife, her mother, reaffirming his commitment to both his daughter and to serving Sakuya Sumeragi.
