Description
Divock Merte is a character from the anime series Code Geass: Rozé of the Recapture, where he serves as a supporting antagonist. He holds the title of Weiss Rook within the Einberg Order of the Neo Britannian Empire. In terms of appearance, Merte is depicted as a tall and muscular man with an imposing and intimidating presence. He has distinct green hair that is slicked back sharply from his face, often styled into a crest-like shape, and his facial features are typically described as severe.
Merte's personality is defined by extreme ambition, arrogance, and a ruthless, militaristic mindset. He is obsessed with obtaining recognition and climbing the ranks of the Neo Britannian hierarchy, and he is willing to sacrifice anyone, including countless innocent civilians, to achieve his personal goals. He displays a profound and open disdain for non-Britannians, particularly the Japanese, whom he refers to using derogatory terms such as "filthy monkeys". Despite his outward confidence, he is strategically limited and prone to overconfidence, often underestimating his opponents and reacting with explosive anger when his plans encounter setbacks. His loyalty to his superiors is shown to be superficial; he is servile when it is convenient but quick to resort to insults and hostility if he feels betrayed or abandoned. Ultimately, his character is defined by being an expendable pawn, a tool used by higher powers for their own ends.
Driven by his desire for glory, Merte's primary motivation is to crush resistance forces and secure his status through the use of overwhelming force. In the story, he is put in command of the formidable sky fortress known as Damocles. He orchestrates a major operation to annihilate the Sapporo ghetto with a powerful F.L.E.I.J.A. warhead, deliberately allowing some resistance fighters to escape as part of a trap designed to maximize casualties and ensure a decisive victory. His role is that of a primary field antagonist whose actions drive a significant portion of the conflict in the Hokkaido region.
Key relationships define his place in the Neo Britannian hierarchy. Merte works under the command of Norland von Lunebelg, who manipulates Merte's entire operation as a diversion for larger strategic goals, ultimately treating him as a disposable asset. He also interacts with Narah Vaughn, known as Schwarz Queen, maintaining a surface-level respectful demeanor towards her, which dissolves into outright hostility after she abandons his failing mission. Another Einberg member, Catherine Sabathra, gives him the nickname Di-kun, a stark contrast to his brutal nature.
Throughout his arc, Merte experiences a distinct lack of positive development, instead succumbing entirely to his flaws. His overconfidence and lack of strategic depth lead directly to his downfall. He fails to anticipate the resourcefulness of the resistance, who manage to infiltrate the Damocles and plant explosives that cripple its floating systems. In the ensuing battle, Merte pilots his personal Knightmare Frame, the Elcarmal, which is equipped with a large cannon, missile pods, and needle-based shield generators. Despite this powerful machine, he is swiftly and easily defeated by the more skilled pilot Haruka Rutaka of the Seven Shining Stars. Facing certain failure and fearing the consequences from his superiors, Merte attempts a final, suicidal attack by manually deploying the F.L.E.I.J.A. warhead while riding his custom Knightmare carrier aircraft. However, this last-ditch effort fails when Ash Phoenix deploys a specialized F.L.E.I.J.A. Eliminator, which neutralizes the explosion and compresses Merte at the atomic level, making him the weapon's sole and ironic victim.
