TV-Series
Description
Kōtarō Hijita is a student in Class 2-3 at Hyakki Academy, a high school for yokai. He is a 17-year-old boy who stands 180 centimeters tall. He is a dorotabou, a type of yokai made primarily of mud. He has medium-length reddish-brown hair, with half of it tied into a ponytail, and a single red eye. He wears an eyepatch to conceal the blank space on the left side of his face where his other eye would be and wears gloves to hide the fact that he only has three fingers on each hand, with the remaining two formed from mud.

Hijita is outgoing, talkative, and considers himself a cool and dependable older-brother figure to his classmates. He is sociable and enjoys teasing his friends, particularly Nyuudou and Utagawa. Beneath his brash exterior, he is protective and loyal, as seen when he and others got into a fight to defend a fellow student from harassment. He also has a mischievous and perverted side, often making lewd jokes or attempting to peek at girls, which his friends frequently call him out for. Despite his initial hostility toward humans, he is capable of sincerity and growth, as demonstrated when he sincerely apologized to the class representative after an embarrassing incident.

Hijita’s initial motivations are shaped by a deep-seated resentment toward humans, stemming from his sister’s marriage to a human. This causes him to act antagonistically toward the human teacher Haruaki Abe on their first meeting. However, after witnessing Haruaki’s genuine passion for teaching, Hijita’s perspective shifts. He drops his hostility, apologizes, and gradually becomes one of Haruaki’s most loyal students, often getting swept up in the teacher’s antics. His motivation evolves from prejudice to a desire to enjoy his school life and protect his friends.

Hijita plays a supporting role in the story as a prominent member of the class, often providing comic relief through his teasing and perverted behavior while also participating in key school events and conflicts. He is a core part of the student body that the human teacher must learn to understand and connect with.

His key relationships are central to his character. Hijita is best friends with Beniko Zashiki, having been born on the same day and living next door to her for their entire lives. He secretly harbors a crush on her but is reluctant to admit it. He is close friends with Sano and Mame, forming a consistent friend group that shepherds in their first year despite initial friction caused by Hijita’s bullying of Mame. His most significant friendship is with his roommate Nyuudou, who initially sought to improve Hijita’s bad attitude. Though they frequently argue, they have grown close and have positively influenced each other. Hijita has a long and strained history with Kashima, who bullied him throughout childhood, though their roles have reversed in high school. He also gets along well with the Ogata twins.

Hijita undergoes notable development over the course of the series. He begins as a bully who preyed on the weaker Mame, but after Nyuudou helped him turn over a new leaf, he sincerely apologized and changed his behavior. His initial outright hatred of humans, fueled by his sister’s marriage, softens into acceptance and friendship with Haruaki. His relationships with Sano and Nyuudou deepen from conflict and distance to genuine bonds.

As a dorotabou, Hijita has the ability to transform his body into mud. He can manipulate mud to trap or restrain others and can generate and hurl it as an attack. He can only use his powers when he removes his gloves. His body is vulnerable to water, which can cause him to dissolve.
