Description
Kuniko Utagawa is a student at Hyakki Academy and serves as the class representative for the chaotic Class 2-3. In her daily life she appears as a polite and graceful young woman with black hair tied into a ponytail, a red polka-dotted bow, and baby-blue eyes, always wearing the school sailor uniform. This gentle exterior conceals her true nature: she is a Gashadokuro, a type of youkai that takes the form of a towering skeleton. While she usually maintains a human shape, powerful emotions or exhaustion can cause her to revert to her giant skeletal body against her will, which often leads to comedic or awkward situations.
Beneath the calm and responsible persona lies a deeply personal history. Kuniko was not always a youkai. In her previous human life she was a frail girl named Ruri who frequently stayed in a hospital. There she became acquainted with the mother of Nyuudou Rensuke and, through her, met Rensuke himself. He visited regularly, tutored her, and they grew close. One day his mask accidentally fell, revealing his single eye, and Ruri’s startled expression made him flee. She gave chase but collapsed and died in a stairwell from her weak health. Her intense lingering feelings and the concentrated death energy in the hospital coalesced into the form of a Gashadokuro. Eventually, the scientist Akira Takahashi found the rampaging spirit, soothed it, and gave it a new body, allowing Ruri to be reborn as Kuniko Utagawa. She enrolled at Hyakki Academy with the secret goal of finding Rensuke again to apologize for her reaction, but initially lacked the courage to reveal herself.
Kuniko’s personality is defined by kindness, diligence, and a deep sense of responsibility. She is well-liked by her classmates and often acts as a calming influence, earning her a reputation as the class madonna. At the same time, she has a humorous, slightly hapless side that surfaces in the absurd environment of the school. She is remarkably studious and reliable in her duties as class representative, but when it comes to matters of the heart she becomes flustered and endearing. She harbors romantic feelings for Nyuudou Rensuke, her co-representative, and much of her inner life revolves around those emotions, even as she tries to keep them under control.
Her role in the story often intersects with Rensuke’s. As a fellow class officer, she works alongside him to manage class projects, school events, and the frequent supernatural trouble stirred up by their classmates. The bond between them slowly grows as she wrestles with her secret past and the desire to be accepted for who she truly is—both the human heart that loved him and the youkai body she now inhabits. Her motivations are driven by a longing for reconciliation and connection, and as the narrative progresses she gradually musters the strength to confront her origins and be honest with Rensuke and her friends.
Outside of her connection to Rensuke, Kuniko’s most significant relationship is with Akira Takahashi, the unorthodox guardian who built her current body and watches over her with a mix of scientific curiosity and genuine care. Her interactions with other classmates highlight her gentle nature; she treats everyone with equal warmth and often mediates disputes, yet she can still become vulnerable when her secret slips and her skeleton form emerges. She also fosters a friendly rivalry or companionship with other girls in the class, though none know her full history at first.
Over the course of the story, Kuniko undergoes notable development. She begins as a quietly anxious student hiding an immense secret and gradually becomes more open about her past and her feelings. The Renren Arc marks a turning point where her true identity as Ruri is revealed, forcing both her and Rensuke to face their shared memories. Through this, she learns to accept herself as both the girl she was and the youkai she has become, finding the courage to apologize and to stand beside Rensuke not just as a classmate but as someone who has cared for him across two lives.
In terms of abilities, Kuniko’s primary youkai trait is her Gashadokuro form. As a giant skeleton, she possesses superhuman size and strength, and her very presence can be intimidating. However, she has not fully mastered her transformation, and it often triggers involuntarily when she is startled, overwhelmed, or exhausted, making it more a source of comic mishaps than a controlled power. Even in human form, she retains the qualities expected of a high-achieving student: sharp intellect, grace, and a quiet tenacity. Her greatest strength is perhaps her unwavering kindness, which allows her to build trust with those around her and ultimately bridge the gap between her tragic past and her hopeful future.
