Description
Aki Hayakawa is a Public Safety Devil Hunter whose life was irrevocably changed during his childhood. On November 18th, his family, including his younger brother Taiyo, was killed during an attack by the Gun Devil. This traumatic event became the central driving force of his life, pushing him to join Public Safety with the singular goal of hunting down and killing the Gun Devil to avenge his loved ones. He was later assigned to Tokyo Special Division 4 under the leadership of Makima, where he became a senior figure to new recruits like Denji and Power.
In terms of personality, Aki generally presents a stoic, mature, and sometimes blunt exterior that can come across as rude to his colleagues. This air of cold detachment is largely a façade. Beneath the surface, he is actually softhearted and kind, possessing a strong moral compass that makes him hate seeing people get hurt, especially those he considers close friends. He is a deeply moralistic person, and his hatred for devils is profound, viewing them as untrustworthy tools at best. He is known to be ruthless in his work, often ensuring devils suffer a slow and painful death. Despite his hardened demeanor, Aki is surprisingly sensitive and is shown to grieve openly for fallen comrades like his former partner, Himeno. Unlike many other Devil Hunters who have become jaded, he still feels the weight of loss acutely.
His primary motivation is revenge against the Gun Devil, an obsession he clings to in order to endure the loss of his family. He is willing to sacrifice his own body, health, and lifespan to gain the power needed for his mission. However, as he forms new bonds with his roommates and colleagues, Denji and Power, his priorities begin to shift. He becomes increasingly concerned with their safety, and by the time of the events in the Reze Arc, he is starting to value protecting his new, found family over his quest for revenge.
In the Reze Arc, Aki’s role is that of a senior Devil Hunter trying to maintain order amidst chaos. He is assigned a new and frustrating partner, the Angel Devil, whose lazy and apathetic attitude clashes with Aki’s work ethic. Aki is also processing the knowledge that his lifespan has been drastically shortened due to his devil contracts, leaving him with roughly only a year to live. He handles this revelation by trying to act as if nothing has changed, likely to avoid pity or explanation. Throughout the movie, he remains a key fighter, using his wits and abilities to protect others, notably saving Denji from the Bomb Devil and risking his own life to rescue the Angel Devil during the final battle.
His key relationships are central to his character. He shares a deep bond with his late partner Himeno, whose death he still mourns. He initially clashes violently with Denji but gradually comes to see him as a close friend and a younger brother figure, taking care of him and worrying about his safety. Similarly, his relationship with the Fiend Power is one of exasperated annoyance that slowly warms into a protective, sibling-like dynamic. He holds a deep trust and a hinted crush on his superior, Makima, though this may be influenced by her powers. In this arc, his relationship with the Angel Devil is a central focus, starting from mutual disdain and developing into a complicated partnership where Aki’s altruistic nature shines through, even at the cost of his own limited time.
Throughout the Reze Arc, Aki’s development continues as he grapples with his mortality and his protective instincts. He shows a growing willingness to set aside his personal vendetta to ensure the survival of Denji and Power. His altruism is highlighted when he grabs the Angel Devil to save him from the Typhoon Devil, an act that costs him two more months of his lifespan simply from the physical contact. This act reaffirms his core nature as someone who cannot stand by and let others die, even for a partner he does not get along with.
Regarding his abilities, Aki is a highly skilled and proficient swordsman and hand-to-hand combatant, having undergone formal training as a Devil Hunter. He has formed contracts with several devils to gain power. He originally had a contract with the Fox Devil, summoning its head to devour enemies by shouting "Kon," but he lost the ability to summon it after using it recklessly against the Katana Man. He also holds a contract with the Curse Devil, which grants him a nail-like sword; stabbing an enemy three times allows him to summon the Curse Devil to inflict massive, often fatal, damage, but this significantly shortens his lifespan. By the time of the Reze Arc, he has entered a contract with the Future Devil, who resides in his right eye. This grants Aki the powerful ability of precognition, allowing him to see a few seconds into the future to predict and dodge attacks. He also begins wielding a katana-like weapon made by the Angel Devil, which can cut intangible targets like ghosts and does not consume his own lifespan to use.
