Description
Pochita is the Chainsaw Devil and the loyal companion of the protagonist Denji. In appearance, Pochita resembles a small, round, dog-like creature with a chainsaw blade protruding from its head, a pull-cord tail, and handles on its back, and it communicates through barks and whines much like an actual dog. Beneath this deceptively cute exterior, however, lies one of the most feared devils in existence.
Pochita originally lived in Hell, where it earned the title Hero of Hell for slaughtering other devils, and its distinctive engine sound was the only thing other devils remembered of that realm. Its most feared ability is erasure: when Pochita consumes a devil, that devil's name and concept are erased from the world entirely. The devil disappears from history and from people's memories, anything associated with it ceases to exist, and it can never be reborn from fear again.
Pochita came to Earth badly wounded and was found by Denji, a boy crushed by his late father's debts. Although Pochita initially tried to eat him, Denji proposed a contract in which they would help each other survive. Denji offered his blood, and the two began living together in poverty. They shared plain bread, Pochita supported Denji's work as a devil hunter by using its chainsaw to cut wood and devils, and it loved listening to Denji talk about his dreams. During this time, Pochita formed a genuine bond with Denji, who became the first person to treat it warmly and give it the simple affection it had long desired, such as being held.
When Denji was betrayed and killed by his employers, Pochita made a new contract to save him. Pochita gave Denji its heart and became part of his body, asking in return that Denji show it his dreams. From that moment, Denji gained the ability to transform into Chainsaw Man by pulling the starter cord on his chest, granting him chainsaws on his head and arms. Pochita now lives on as Denji's heart, sharing his body and quietly watching over him from within.
In the Reze Arc, Pochita appears in Denji's recurring dreams, standing before a closed door and warning him never to open it. In this way, Pochita acts as a guardian of Denji's mind, protecting suppressed memories and the more vulnerable parts of Denji's humanity.
