Description
The Fox Devil is a supporting entity in the world of devil hunting, known for its massive size and distinctive appearance. It takes the form of an enormous arctic fox, with fur that appears white as depicted in the anime adaptation. Its most striking features are the multiple, glowing red-orange eyes that cover not only its head but also its limbs, giving it a distinctly supernatural and unsettling look. While it can be summoned to various locations, its true, full body resides in Kyoto.
In terms of personality, the Fox Devil is characterized by a notable friendliness toward humans, which is somewhat unusual for a devil. It willingly enters into contracts with multiple Devil Hunters affiliated with Public Safety. However, this relationship comes with a strong condition based on superficial preferences. The Fox Devil is known to be highly selective, only forming contracts with Japanese men, and among them, it reserves the right to summon its most powerful weapon—its head—exclusively for those it deems attractive. Hunters who do not meet this standard are limited to summoning only one of its paws. Beyond this vanity, the Fox Devil possesses a fickle and temperamental nature. It has little sense of loyalty or responsibility toward its contractors and will not hesitate to abandon a fight or break an agreement if the situation becomes unpleasant, distasteful, or dangerous. Its primary motivations appear to be its own comfort and satisfaction, as it notably refuses to consume devil-human hybrids, complaining loudly about their monstrous or bad flavor.
Within the story, the Fox Devil serves as a powerful, conventional asset for the Public Safety Devil Hunters. Its primary role is to be a summoned weapon, capable of eliminating lesser devils with a single, devastating bite. The cost of its contract is relatively low compared to its immense power, typically requiring the contractor to offer a small piece of their body, such as skin or a lock of hair, each time they summon it. To call upon the Fox Devil, a contractor must make a specific hand sign resembling a fox's mouth and speak the command Kon, which is an onomatopoeia for a fox's cry.
The Fox Devil's most significant relationship is with Aki Hayakawa, who was its primary contractor and one of the few allowed to summon its head. This partnership was initially highly effective, but it soured dramatically during a battle with the hybrid Katana Man. After Aki commanded it to swallow this enemy, the Fox Devil found the taste monstrous and was grievously wounded from the inside when Katana Man cut his way out. Following this traumatic incident, the Fox Devil refused to answer any of Aki’s summons, effectively terminating their contract.
Despite this break with Aki, the Fox Devil continues to work with other hunters. In the events of the Reze Arc, it is summoned by other members of Public Safety to confront the Bomb Devil, Reze. These attempts prove largely ineffective, as Reze easily evades the Fox Devil's attacks. On one occasion, the Fox Devil briefly succeeds in swallowing her, but immediately complains about the flavor and vanishes, abandoning the fight and leaving its contractors vulnerable. This pattern of behavior highlights its development from a reliable ally against common devils to a less dependable force against the more unusual and powerful hybrid enemies that emerge.
The notable abilities of the Fox Devil are centered on its partial summoning. Through a contract, a hunter can teleport a part of the Fox Devil from Kyoto to their location. The most common summon is the giant paw, used for a crushing swipe. The more powerful summon is the head, which can bite through concrete and devour devils whole with incredible force. This attack is often instantaneous and lethal to standard devils. The Fox Devil also possesses enhanced durability and powerful regenerative abilities, allowing it to heal from significant wounds, such as having its head slashed open, by consuming blood. However, its powers have clear limitations: it can only perform one attack per summoning, it cannot be called in sealed or looped spaces that isolate it from its main body in Kyoto, and its effectiveness drops considerably against devil-human hybrids, whose unique physiology it finds repulsive and difficult to damage.
