Description
The character known as Démon-Ange, or the Angel Devil, is a member of Public Safety's Special Division 4 who plays a significant supporting role in the Reze Arc. He is a devil with a human-like form, possessing a strikingly beautiful and androgynous appearance. He has long red hair, a set of white-feathered wings on his back, and a halo floating above his head, which visually contrasts with his true nature as a devil. His body is slight, and his height is recorded as 155 centimeters.
In terms of personality, the Angel Devil is characterized by a profound and almost performative laziness. He often expresses a desire to die rather than work and complains about any form of exertion. He has stated a belief that, as a devil first, humans should die in pain, and he shows little motivation to be efficient in his duties as a devil hunter. However, this apathetic exterior hides a more complex inner world. He is not truly cruel; instead, he appears to be deeply traumatized and emotionally withdrawn. This is largely due to the nature of his power, which forces him to absorb the lifespans of any human he touches, a fact that gives him nightmares about the people he has killed. He is socially isolated as a result, preferring to keep his distance from others to avoid accidentally harming them.
His primary motivation throughout the Reze Arc seems to be a passive search for an end to his suffering, which he believes death would bring. He is not driven by ambition or malice, but by a desire to escape his existence and the guilt associated with his abilities. As the story progresses, particularly through his partnership with Aki Hayakawa, the Angel Devil undergoes subtle but important development. While he initially clashes with the serious and principled Aki, he begins to show signs of caring for his partner. During a fierce battle, when he is about to be swept away by a typhoon, he tells Aki to let him go and die, but Aki instead risks his own life to save him. This act of selflessness, which shortens Aki's lifespan, visibly affects the Angel Devil, hinting at his growing rejection of his own fatalism and a nascent desire for connection.
The Angel Devil's role in the story is that of a reluctant but powerful asset for Public Safety. He is assigned as Aki Hayakawa's new partner after the previous arc. Their relationship is initially tense, as Aki is disgusted by the Angel Devil's lazy and callous attitude, especially when he refuses to grant a dying man a merciful death. However, during the crisis caused by Reze, the Bomb Devil, the Angel Devil becomes a crucial fighter. He participates in the desperate defense against Reze and her ally, the Typhoon Devil, using his abilities to heal Denji by feeding him his blood and later landing the decisive blow that helps Makima eliminate Reze. His key relationships are with Aki, whose partnership forces him to confront his own apathy, and Makima, who holds a dark and controlling influence over his past.
The Angel Devil possesses several notable and dangerous abilities. His most passive and uncontrollable power is the automatic absorption of any human's lifespan through direct skin contact. Even a brief touch can drain months or years from a person's life, causing a painless death if contact is maintained. He can store this stolen lifespan within himself and later convert it into powerful supernatural weapons, which he manifests from his halo. These weapons range from swords to spears, and their strength is proportional to the number of years of life used to create them. For example, he can create a katana for Aki that can cut intangible ghosts, or, when controlled by Makima, a massive spear empowered by one thousand years of human life. His wings are also incredibly durable, capable of deflecting gunfire to protect himself or others. Despite his lazy demeanor and tragic background, his power level is considered the second-highest in Division 4, surpassed only by the veteran Kishibe.
