Description
Kanata Katagiri, whose real name is Kanata Rivington, is the protagonist of the story. He is a young racer in his late teens with a mixed heritage, being half-Japanese and half-British. He was raised in Cambridge, United Kingdom, and eventually decides to travel to Japan for two main purposes: to compete in the MFG racing competition and to search for his estranged Japanese father. To symbolize his quest to reconnect with his father, he races under his father’s surname, Katagiri.
Outside of a vehicle, Kanata possesses a calm, polite, and humble personality. He is kind-hearted and respectful, often deflecting praise and becoming embarrassed when complimented. However, this gentle demeanor completely transforms when he gets behind the wheel. While racing, he becomes hyper-focused, fearless, and extremely competitive, displaying a ruthless determination to win that contrasts sharply with his usual modest nature.
His primary motivation for participating in MFG is not financial gain. He is driven by the personal mission to locate his missing father by gaining attention through his racing performance. Additionally, he seeks to push his own driving abilities to their absolute limits, pursuing the pure thrill and challenge of the sport rather than wealth or fame. He supports himself through a part-time job, preferring to live an ordinary life outside of racing.
In the story, Kanata enters MFG as a rookie driver in the competition’s fourth year. Despite his unknown background and the significant horsepower disadvantage of his vehicle, he immediately draws attention due to his exceptional technique. His role is that of an underdog who consistently overcomes superior machinery through skill and strategy, climbing the rankings and challenging top-ranked drivers. His arrival in Japan and his unique driving style soon begin to reveal a mysterious connection to the legacy of a legendary former racer.
Kanata’s key relationships shape his life in Japan. He stays with the Saionji family, old friends of his parents who treat him like a son. The daughter of the family, Ren Saionji, becomes his closest friend and love interest, supporting his search for his father. He is also supported by Ogata, a mechanic who provides him with his car, a Toyota 86, and acts as his operator during races. Finally, he is the student of the legendary driver Takumi Fujiwara, who was his instructor and profoundly influenced his driving philosophy and techniques.
Kanata demonstrates significant development as the story progresses. He begins as a promising but largely unknown rookie and gradually gains supporters, earns the respect of fellow racers, and makes a name for himself in the highly competitive MFG series. His consistent high placements, including top-five finishes, showcase his growth from an outsider to a serious championship contender. A major emotional undercurrent of his development is his continuous, and often frustrating, search for his missing father, which adds personal stakes to his professional achievements.
Kanata possesses several notable abilities that make him a formidable racer. He has a background in professional racing, having started in karts at a young age and winning championships before graduating from a prestigious racing school in the UK with the highest scores in its history. His driving style is smooth, technical, and precise, focusing on car control and tire conservation over raw power. He is a master of technique, excelling at late braking and reading other drivers’ movements. A key advantage is his photographic memory, which allows him to perfectly memorize track layouts, road conditions, and the positions of other cars, giving him a massive strategic edge. He also utilizes advanced techniques like the Blind Attack, which involves disappearing from an opponent’s view to execute a surprise overtaking maneuver. This combination of elite training, mental acuity, and learned techniques from his legendary mentor allows him to compete against far more powerful cars.
