Description
Kanata Katagiri, who is also known as Kanata Rivington, serves as the central figure of his story. He is a young man of mixed Japanese and British heritage, born as Kanata Rivington and raised in Cambridge, England. He chooses to compete under his father’s surname, Katagiri, as a way to signal his presence and search for his estranged parent.
His journey brings him to Japan at around nineteen years of age, driven by two primary motivations: to find his missing father and to participate in the MFG racing competition. Off the track, Kanata is characterized by a calm, polite, and humble demeanor. He is respectful and often appears reserved, feeling embarrassed by excessive praise. However, this gentle personality transforms when he is behind the wheel, where he becomes intensely focused, fearless, and highly competitive.
Kanata's background is deeply rooted in professional motorsports, having trained at the prestigious Royal Donington Park Racing School in the United Kingdom under the legendary driver Takumi Fujiwara. His racing career began extraordinarily early; he started in karts at age four and by seven was competing in the British Kart Championships, winning six major titles over two years. He progressed to the F4 Championship at age ten, securing the title within two years. At racing school, he completed his graduation exam with the best overall scores in the institution’s history, attracting numerous sponsorship offers which he ultimately rejected to care for his ailing mother until her passing.
In the story, Kanata enters the MFG competition as a rookie driver. Despite the immense disadvantage of using a relatively low-powered Toyota 86 (ZN6) against a field of high-performance supercars, his exceptional technique allows him to compete at the highest level. He lives with the Saionji family, old friends of his parents, and forms a close, slowly developing bond with their daughter, Ren Saionji, who becomes his closest friend and supports his search for his father. His racing efforts are supported by Ogata, a mechanic who owns the 86 and acts as his operator, as well as fellow racer Shun Aiba, who becomes a supporter and friend.
Kanata possesses several notable abilities that set him apart. He has an eidetic or photographic memory, allowing him to perfectly memorize track layouts, road conditions, and even complex kanji characters after only a brief exposure. This ability is a significant asset, enabling him to navigate courses with precision despite limited practice. His driving style is exceptionally smooth, clean, and technical. He is a master of late braking, tire conservation, and reading opponents’ movements. He has inherited and adapted techniques from his mentor, Takumi Fujiwara, including the gutter run and left-foot braking. Kanata has also developed his own signature maneuvers, such as the "Sidewalk Run," where he uses the side of the road to gain an advantage. Throughout the competition, his performance continues to develop as he challenges top-ranked drivers and attracts attention for his remarkable skill and the mysterious legacy he carries.
