Description
Hitoyoshi Yokoya is the main protagonist of the story, a high school student whose ordinary life is interrupted by an extraordinary encounter. He is a fifteen-year-old first-year student at the private Ogiso High School, later turning sixteen as the narrative progresses. Born on January 1st, he lives alone in a house that is often in a state of disarray, as he is not particularly skilled at household chores. His parents are absent, and he lives separately from his mother and his younger sister, Riko, who visits him occasionally.

Physically, Hitoyoshi is of below-average height at 157 centimeters and weighs 57 kilograms, a trait he is self-conscious about. He has short, unkempt light brown hair, pale skin, and grey eyes, and is typically seen in his school uniform or casual turtleneck shirts. At his core, he possesses a kind and gentle personality, showing compassion and empathy not only to his loved ones but also to strangers and even individuals connected to the criminal underworld, such as Grace and Zhang. This inherent kindness is the primary reason he decides to accept Yuki into his home despite her dark background.

Despite his generally warm nature, Hitoyoshi is initially wary of falling in love. A past experience where a girl rejected his confession, telling him he only felt "lonely," deeply wounded his spirit and confidence. This event has made him cautious and prone to dismissing his own growing romantic feelings, particularly those he develops for Yuki, which he constantly tries to deny. He can be open and expressive with his emotions but also maintains a humble and reserved side. He shares a close, long-standing friendship with his classmates Taiga Kurokawa and Kobachi Yamashita. The three have known each other since elementary school and are collectively known as the "Three Idiots". Hitoyoshi is genuinely grateful to them for their mental and emotional support during his troubled middle school years, a period when he was rebellious.

The central event that defines his role in the story is his meeting with Yuki, a former assassin who arrives at his door asking to be hired as a maid. Initially, he refuses, frightened by her past. However, after she saves his life by pushing him out of the way of an oncoming truck, his perspective changes, and he hires her as his servant, inviting her to live with him. This decision sets the entire plot in motion. His relationship with Yuki is the most significant of the story, evolving from one of shock and initial mistrust to a deep, sincere, and reciprocal romantic attraction. He also has a distant but present familial relationship with his mother and younger sister, Riko, who is an elementary school student that quickly grows fond of Yuki.

Throughout the series, Hitoyoshi undergoes notable development. He gains confidence and his affection for Yuki becomes undeniable, progressing from embarrassment and denial to a clear and caring attachment. He also shows a remarkable capacity to accept others, demonstrated when he adopts a stray dog he finds at his house and names it Agemochitaro, acknowledging his own lack of naming sense. Furthermore, it is revealed that he has a distant familial connection to Yuki's previous master, Hamuro, a relation so convoluted that Hitoyoshi himself jokes that they are essentially strangers. While he possesses no superhuman abilities, his most notable traits are his unwavering kindness, his openness to accepting people from all walks of life, and his growing emotional courage. His favorite food is fried food, a simple preference that suits his honest and straightforward personality.
