Description
Mai Tennoji, known under the alias Utsuro Karakururi, is a former shinobi from the Souga Village, a hidden settlement that operated in the shadows to protect the outside world. As the younger twin sister of Ai Tennoji, she was considered the most talented ninja of her generation, having far surpassed her older sibling in skill from a very young age. Despite her natural aptitude for combat, Mai was initially a gentle child who disliked violence and believed all living things, from birds to bears, deserved protection. This compassionate nature would ultimately be shattered by the circumstances of her duty.

Her personality is defined by a tragic duality, existing as two distinct selves. Mai Tennoji represents the original, kind-hearted girl who was forced to suppress her empathy. Utsuro Karakururi is the mask of a hollow, nihilistic assassin created to hide the real Mai away. This persona is a direct response to the intense psychological conflict she endured, embodying the emptiness she felt after her repeated acts of violence. As Utsuro, she is cold, ruthless, and seemingly indifferent, viewing the world with a profound sense of hatred and believing herself to be beyond forgiveness for her past actions. This external persona hides a deep-seated feeling of loneliness and a desperate, unspoken wish for atonement.

Mai’s motivations are rooted in the trauma of her life as a shinobi. Being the most talented, she was frequently assigned secret assassination missions, a reality that forced her to constantly mask her innate compassion. The breaking point came when she was forced to kill a group of bears she had befriended after they attacked a house in search of food. Unable to bear the guilt any longer and believing her role as a shinobi had become obsolete, she stole the cursed blade Nihil, stabbed her sister Ai, and burned her village to the ground before fleeing. She later joined the Amarariruku, a group of children who were failed by the world’s hero, Stigma, and exist to spread fear. Her primary goal as Utsuro was to destroy the world that she believed had made her into a hollow monster, using her powers to absorb and weaponize the fear of others.

In the story, she serves as a major antagonist during her attack on Tokyo, where she traps thousands of civilians within her Amarariruku dome and systematically drains their hearts. Her role is deeply personal to the hero Shy and her sister, as it forces a confrontation not just with a powerful enemy, but with the nature of pain, forgiveness, and the possibility of redemption. Utsuro is widely considered the most powerful and skilled combatant within the Amarariruku, easily overpowering Shy and her sister in their initial encounters.

Her most significant relationship is with her twin sister, Ai Tennoji. While Mai’s talents outshone Ai’s, she also resented the life of a shinobi that Ai was seemingly able to live with more ease. In contrast, Ai deeply loves her sister and is unaware of the true extent of her suffering, a failing she later comes to regret. After Mai’s betrayal, shinobi are sent to hunt her down, and Mai kills them all, keeping their broken blades as trophies. The sisters eventually fuse, creating a single, more powerful being with Utsuro’s will as the dominant force while Ai sleeps within her subconscious.

Utsuro experiences a significant development over the course of the Tokyo arc. Initially resolute in her hatred, her conviction is shaken by the hero Shy, who, after rescuing Ai from her subconscious, refuses to fight her and insists on understanding her pain. When other Amarariruku members arrive to pressure her into continuing their plan, she instead betrays them, choosing to side with her sister and the heroes. Having finally felt the acceptance she longed for, she helps defeat the group’s weapon, the Holy Mother Bear. In the end, as her dome is destroyed, she uses her abilities to absorb the wave of fear threatening the city, an act that causes her to crumble away. Before disappearing, she gives her ring to Shy, hoping it can be used to stop Stigma, marking her final turn from villain to someone seeking atonement.

As a fighter, Utsuro is an expert swordswoman whose refined skills are considered unrivaled among the Amarariruku. Her primary weapon is the Divine Blade Nihil, a cursed katana she stole that stirs the hearts of those who touch it. Through her training, she can place her heart into her sword and transmute her emotions into physical power, transforming joy into enthusiasm, anger into strength, and sadness into precision. She possesses formidable air manipulation abilities, capable of generating large winds and creating constructs like blades and tornadoes. Her ultimate technique allows her to absorb the emotions, memories, and energy of others, which she used to drain the fear from thousands of civilians in Tokyo. She can also manifest a pocket reality called the Funeral Stream, a space from which there is no escape unless one of the combatants falls. In her fused state with Ai, her power is said to double, making her strong enough to challenge the world’s heroes and she gains new techniques like the Sala Tree and Fog Cleaving Dance.
