Description
Mordred is a high-ranking antagonist in The Eminence in Shadow, serving as the former Ninth Seat of the Rounds within the Cult of Diablos and the leader of a suborganization. He is a charismatic yet deeply arrogant and megalomaniacal figure, possessing a pronounced superiority complex and a violent, domineering nature that regularly displays a lack of conscience and empathy. His motivations are rooted in the Cult’s agenda of acquiring power and controlling ancient relics, particularly the Black Rose artifact. In the story, Mordred first appears during the Black Rose Incident arc in the Oriana Kingdom, where he orchestrates plans to summon the demon Ragnarok and destroy the kingdom. He is a highly skilled swordsman, wielding a legendary elven artifact known as the Invisible blade, which allows him to strike with deadly precision. He also possesses strong magical abilities, including a demonic transformation that enables him to summon Ragnarok, and a speed-enhancing technique called Quick Flash that lets him overwhelm opponents with rapid strikes. Despite his power, Mordred eventually faces Shadow and the members of Shadow Garden, and though he survives a direct hit from Shadow’s ultimate attack in the web novel—losing an arm in the process—he remains a persistent threat. In the upcoming film The Eminence in Shadow: Lost Echoes, Mordred’s role expands as the story shifts to a post-apocalyptic version of modern Japan. According to promotional material, his world is literally turned upside down during the film’s events, suggesting that the new setting forces him to adapt to an unfamiliar and devastated environment. While his core arrogant and ruthless personality remains, the film is expected to explore how his character responds to this radical change, and he appears in a position of narrative prominence alongside Cid Kagenou and other key figures. Mordred’s key relationships include his subordinate Perv Asshat, the Royal Chancellor of Oriana, whom he treats with disdain, and his direct opposition to Shadow and the Seven Shadows. His development is marked by his survival of catastrophic defeats and his continued pursuit of power, even as the Cult’s influence wanes and new threats emerge in the ruined Earth setting.
