Description
Hatakeyama is introduced as a seemingly ordinary college student who is drawn into the high-stakes world of underground mahjong. He initially appears as a temporary partner to the protagonist, Kei, during a critical team trial. This experience, facing the threat of ruin and the rush of unpredictable thrills, acts as a catalyst, stripping away his everyday facade and revealing his true inner nature. He is a character defined by a constant need for excitement, showing little regard for social conventions and a curiosity that leads him to seek out dangerous activities without hesitation.

At his core, Hatakeyama is a thrill-seeker who becomes addicted to the peril and adrenaline of the game. His pursuit of self-destruction and the extreme sensations that accompany it becomes a primary motivation, eventually leading him down a dark path of drug addiction. This dependence transforms him, and he later resurfaces as a substitute player for a syndicate known as Tayao's side, having forged a unique and reckless style of play centered on "open reach." This method is underpinned by a highly precise ability to read his opponents and the flow of the game.

His role in the story is that of a foil and a cautionary figure, illustrating the destructive potential of the underground mahjong world. He experiences a significant character arc, beginning as a college student who is a devoted fan of canned coffee, preferring a lightly sweetened brew for everyday consumption but switching to black coffee when the situation becomes serious. After hitting rock bottom, addicted and near death, he finds a renewed sense of purpose. He begins to defy commands from his superiors, like Hideharu Seki, choosing to play according to his own instincts. Ultimately, the game allows him to mature, and he forms an unlikely bond with his opponent, Doujima, leading to a friendship where the two would occasionally play against each other after their match.

Key relationships heavily influence his trajectory. His partnership with Kei exposes him to the highest levels of risk and skill. Later, his confrontation with Doujima becomes a pivotal turning point. Although Doujima manages to turn the tables on him with a desperate strategy, the experience leads to mutual respect. In the Ryuoh title match, Hatakeyama demonstrates formidable skill, managing to pressure and corner Kei in a direct confrontation, showcasing how far he has come.

Hatakeyama's most notable ability is his development of a dangerous and distinctive mahjong style despite his severe addiction. He possesses sharp reading skills that allow him to overwhelm opponents in the early stages of a match. Even in his final moments, his pride as a mahjong player remains unbroken. After being abducted by Ootsuji's henchmen and subjected to horrific torture in an attempt to force him to betray information about Kei, he refuses to give in. Defiant until the end, he uses his own blood to draw the match record and his final hand on the floor, upholding his identity as a player even as he meets his tragic and brutal end.
