Description
Hideharu Seki is a supporting character in the mahjong suspense narrative, known within the story as a fixer or a jack-of-all-trades with deep connections to the criminal underworld. His background is that of a mysterious intermediary who navigates the dark side of society, facilitating illegal transactions and acting as a living link between various underworld factions. He is the one who first brings the protagonist, Kei, into this dangerous fold, having taken an interest in Kei’s cold and skilled playstyle. Seki is the person who ultimately transfers custody of the girl named Amina to Kei, using her as a form of currency in their initial dealings.

As for his personality, Seki is characterized by his calculating, reserved, and rarely shaken demeanor. He seldom shows his true emotions, maintaining a cool and composed exterior even in tense situations. Behind his calm facade, however, lies a highly intelligent and ruthless strategist who views murder and abandonment as necessary tools. He has a cruel and pragmatic streak, willing to commit all kinds of questionable acts to achieve his goals. Despite this, and in a contradictory twist, he also demonstrates a surprising, caring side, particularly in his continued, quiet concern for Amina's well-being. His primary motivation appears to be survival and strategic advancement, as he constantly seeks to maneuver himself into advantageous positions, whether by conspiring to devour a yakuza's territory or by changing allegiances to whichever faction offers the most security.

In the story, Hideharu Seki serves as a key behind-the-scenes manipulator, the mastermind who sets major plots into motion. He is responsible for introducing Kei to high-stakes underground mahjong parlors and using him as a pawn in a larger conspiracy against a rival group known as the Sakurawa-kai. He proposes a deal to Kei: betray his current allies in exchange for a visa to help Amina. While his intricate long-term plan nearly succeeds in securing a major victory, it ultimately fails due to Kei's unexpected resistance. Following this defeat, where he loses almost everything, Seki is forced to go into hiding. He later resurfaces after undergoing plastic surgery, drastically changing his appearance to a shorter haircut and softer eyes, and aligns himself with new masters. Throughout the narrative, he consistently survives by proving his usefulness, eventually finding himself working for or alongside the very people he once tried to outmaneuver.

Key relationships define his journey. His most significant connection is with Kei, whom he first uses as a tool but later comes to fear, admitting his own hidden terror of the young man. With Amina, he maintains a secret, paternalistic connection, providing her with medicine to ease her illness, even if it is implied to be a placebo. He works under and alongside various powerful crime bosses, such as Noriyuki Takatsu and Hatori, displaying a unique talent for "changing flags" when his survival depends on it. Seki undergoes a notable character development, transforming from a confident and calculating puppet master in control of the back alleys to a survivor who must constantly adapt, change his face, and bow to those he once considered enemies to stay alive. He loses his initial aura of untouchability and becomes more of a pragmatic, if somewhat degraded, operator.

Regarding his abilities, Hideharu Seki is not primarily a mahjong champion, and his skills at the game itself are considered inferior to the true prodigies in the series. His true strength lies in his exceptional resourcefulness, strategic planning, and deep knowledge of the underworld. He is a skilled negotiator and a master of long-term schemes, capable of orchestrating complex plots to unseat established powers. His ability to survive, adapt, and find a place for himself even after catastrophic failure is perhaps his most notable talent, alongside his fluency in Tagalog and his connections to Southeast Asian criminal networks.
