Description
Ai is a central character in the narrative, introduced as a formidable female mahjong expert from the Hakata region. Her striking beauty and a naturally taciturn, cool demeanor give her an icy and emotionally distant presence that is noted for being even more pronounced than that of the protagonist, Kei. To support herself, she occasionally works in the hostess business, but her true domain is the high-stakes world of underground mahjong.

Her personality is a direct product of a deeply traumatic past, specifically a history of sexual abuse at the hands of her stepfather. This harrowing experience forged a ruthless and calculating individual who approaches mahjong not merely as a game, but as a tool for survival and dominance. One of the most brutal aspects of her character is the ritual she performs upon utterly defeating an opponent. This ritual involves forcing the loser to bet a finger, which she then severs and disposes of by flushing it down a toilet, all while taunting them with a look of utter despair. This act encapsulates the brutal, unforgiving nature that defines her.

The primary motivation driving Ai throughout the story is a deep-seated desire for revenge against the protagonist, Kei. In their early encounters, she was able to overwhelm him using her unique perceptual ability, known as "The Eye." However, Kei exploited a weakness in this ability by revealing all his tiles, a desperate tactic that led to her complete and humiliating defeat. This loss ignited an obsession in Ai, and she is determined to exact revenge. She continues to challenge the underworld's best players, eventually entering the prestigious Dragon Phoenix Tournament all while secretly harboring a complex and possessive feeling for Kei, referring to him internally as "my emperor" as she bides her time for a rematch.

Despite her vendetta, her role in the story is not solely that of an antagonist. During the "Hitohashira Arc," she lends her support to Kei and another ally, Hideharu Seki, when they struggle against a powerful opponent in Sendai. She joins a Survival Mahjong event, where her solid strategy helps the group avoid immediate danger. However, her deep, if twisted, connection to Kei leads to her downfall in this arc. In a moment of impulse, she shields Kei after he triggers a deadly Russian Roulette mechanic by drawing the fatal bullet. Her actions are ruled a foul, or chonbo, and as a direct consequence of this fateful mistake, she loses her life in the Russian Roulette.

Ai's key relationships are almost exclusively defined by the game of mahjong. Her primary and most significant relationship is with Kei, a figure she simultaneously seeks to destroy and holds in secret, obsessive regard. She also has a notable connection to Matsumoto, an aged veteran player whom she defeats in a crucial match, causing him to suffer the devastating loss of all his fingers. In a strategic context, she is capable of forming temporary alliances, as seen when she collaborates with Kei and another player, Maekawa, to unseat a common, more powerful opponent. In this instance, she uses her skills to manipulate the flow of the game while Kei executes a larger strategy.

Her development as a character is tied directly to her reliance on her special ability. In the finals of the tournament, she finds that her "Eye" has no effect on Kei or other top-tier players like Otsuji and Maekawa. Initially, she continues with an unyielding offensive, but eventually experiences a significant strategic shift. She abandons her dependence on her supernatural insight to read her opponents and instead concentrates fully on the tiles themselves. This change in focus allows her to decisively overcome her other rivals and set the stage for a final, one-on-one showdown with Kei.

Ai's most notable ability is "The Eye," an extraordinary form of insight born from her past trauma that allows her to swiftly read her opponents' true intentions and manipulate them at the mahjong table. She uses this power to seize momentum and build points, often by working on the other players at the table. However, this ability has a critical weakness; a player like Kei, who acts in a way that is completely transparent or illogical, can render it ineffective. Beyond her supernatural ability, Ai is a highly skilled strategist capable of forming complex hands, such as an unlikely 1-pin wait on a Yakuman (a limit-hand), and is adept at the cold, calculated psychological warfare that defines underground mahjong.
