Description
Masaki Michishita is the main protagonist of Shin Yaranai ka, a young gay high school student who attends a preparatory school. He describes himself as an ordinary schoolboy, but he acknowledges that he is attracted to men, though he has no prior sexual experience with them at the start of the story. His appearance is unremarkable, with short black hair and blue eyes. His personality is characterized by a certain naivete and impulsiveness. When nature calls and he rushes to a public restroom in a park, he becomes distracted upon spotting Takakazu Abe, a handsome auto mechanic sitting on a bench. Despite his urgent need to relieve himself, Masaki is easily swayed by Abe’s direct proposition and quickly forgets his original purpose, seizing what he perceives as an opportunity for romance. This demonstrates his romantic longing and a tendency to follow his desires without fully considering the consequences.

Masaki’s central motivation is his search for romantic or sexual connection, which overrides his basic physical needs. He is drawn to Abe’s confidence and good looks, and he willingly participates in the unusual sexual encounter that follows. In the course of that encounter, his bodily functions repeatedly interrupt the act, leading Abe to suggest increasingly bizarre solutions. Masaki is initially hesitant and shows signs of embarrassment or horror, but he ultimately complies, indicating a mix of curiosity, passivity, and a desire to please. The story ends ambiguously, with Masaki reflecting that the encounter turned into a “shit show,” suggesting a blend of bewilderment and regret.

Masaki’s key relationship is with Takakazu Abe. Abe takes the lead, initiating the encounter and directing most of the action, while Masaki follows along. Their dynamic is unequal, with Abe as the assertive, experienced partner and Masaki as the more hesitant, inexperienced participant. There is no indication of any other significant relationships or character development beyond this single encounter. The story does not depict Masaki possessing any notable abilities or skills; he is presented as an ordinary student thrust into an extraordinary and bizarre situation.
