Description
Evangeline A.K. McDowell, also known as Yukihime or Snow Princess, is a central figure in the UQ Holder! narrative. Her full name includes the middle names Athanasia and Katherine. Originating from the era of the Hundred Years' War, she was born a human princess but her life was irrevocably changed at the age of ten when she was transformed into a Shinso vampire, a true ancestor of vampires, by the enigmatic Mage of the Beginning. This traumatic event marked the beginning of an extraordinarily long life, and she has existed for over 700 years, carrying the weight of centuries of experience and memory.

In terms of personality, Evangeline presents a complex and multi-layered character. On the surface, she often maintains a cold, strict, and regal demeanor, a reflection of her immense power and long history. However, beneath this exterior lies a deep-seated loneliness born from centuries of being hunted, feared, and unable to form lasting bonds with mortals. Despite her fearsome reputation, she is not cruel without reason and has a particular disdain for those who harm women and children. Throughout her long life, she has developed a dry wit and a certain world-weary cynicism, yet she also displays a genuine, if often hidden, capacity for care and affection. This is most evident in her role as a guardian and teacher, where she shows patience and a desire to protect those she considers her own.

Her primary motivation throughout UQ Holder! is deeply personal and rooted in her past. She is driven by the need to save Negi Springfield, the son of her former companion Nagi and a student she once mentored. Negi has fallen under the control of the same Mage of the Beginning who cursed her. The organization she leads, UQ Holder, was founded in large part to find a way to free him, and this mission takes precedence over all other aspects of her life. On a more fundamental level, she also seeks a place to belong and a reason to continue her immortal existence, which she ultimately finds in her family of fellow immortals.

Within the story, Evangeline holds the vital role of the founder and undisputed leader of the UQ Holder organization, holding the number one position. The group serves as a sanctuary for immortals who are outcasts from normal society. She is also the direct guardian and mentor to the protagonist, Touta Konoe. Initially living under the assumed name Yukihime, she works as a schoolteacher in a rural village, raising and training Touta. When their peaceful life is shattered by bounty hunters, she reveals their immortal nature to him and guides him toward the Capital and the world of UQ Holder, acting as his anchor and primary source of wisdom in his new life.

Her key relationships are extensive and define much of her character arc. Her bond with Touta Konoe is one of profound, familial love. She saved his life by turning him into a vampire and raised him as her own, acting as a strict but caring mother figure. This relationship is complicated by the fact that he is also a clone of her beloved former student, Negi Springfield. Her history with Negi is equally significant; she was his magic teacher, instructing him in the forbidden Dark Magic she herself invented. There is a deep mutual respect and affection between them, and her current struggle to save him is a testament to that bond. Before Negi, she had a complex relationship with his father, Nagi Springfield, the legendary Thousand Master. Nagi was one of the few people who showed her kindness, which led her to fall in love with him, though he ultimately trapped her in a curse known as the "School Hell" to give her a stable life. Throughout her centuries, she has admitted to falling in love only three times, with these two men and finally with Touta.

Evangeline undergoes significant development over the course of the series. She begins in a state of resigned isolation, having witnessed countless generations live and die and having shouldered the burden of her mission alone for decades. Her life with Touta in the countryside, followed by the establishment of UQ Holder as a true family, softens her considerably. She evolves from a lonely, ancient witch into a dedicated leader and motherly figure, willing to fight, sacrifice, and hope for the future of her new family, even as she continues to carry the pain of her 700-year past. Her journey is one of rediscovering her own humanity and the value of connection, moving beyond mere survival.

Finally, her notable abilities are among the most formidable in the world. As a Shinso vampire, she possesses true immortality, making her immune to aging and conventional death, and grants her immense regenerative capabilities. She is a master of ice magic, capable of freezing entire areas and creating powerful constructs at will. Her most feared technique, however, is the invention of Magia Erebea, the Dark Magic. This forbidden art allows the user to absorb offensive magic into their own body, merging it with their soul to gain the spell's power as a personal armament at the cost of immense physical and spiritual toll. Using this technique, she can achieve forms such as Krystalline Basilea, which places a vast area under her frozen control. She is also known as the "Puppet Master" or "One Who Commands Dolls," able to simultaneously control hundreds of puppets in combat. Despite her magical prowess, she is also a skilled practitioner of Aikido, demonstrating formidable hand-to-hand combat abilities, and is known to dislike garlic and swimming.
