Description
Momoka Kawaragi is a main character in the anime Girls Band Cry. She is a twenty-year-old street musician who serves as the lead guitarist and de facto leader of the band Togenashi Togeari. Born on December 9 in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, she has a straightforward, tomboyish personality and generally dislikes feminine attire, preferring plain, simple hairstyles and casual clothing. Despite her rough, cool exterior, she is cheerful, caring, and exudes the reliable, mentoring aura of a senior member in a sports team. She is also known for being somewhat careless in daily life and enjoys drinking alcohol despite having a low tolerance.

Momoka’s primary motivation is her deep love for music and her desire to connect with others through her art. She was originally the leader of the band Diamond Dust, which started as a group of school friends but later signed with a major label. She left that band because she felt it was becoming too commercialized, valuing authentic expression over corporate direction. After meeting Nina Iseri by chance in Kawasaki, she discovered they shared a similar love for music and a desire for genuine self-expression. This meeting led to the formation of Togenashi Togeari, where Momoka acts as the guitarist, songwriter, and emotional anchor.

In the story, Momoka’s role is central. She is the experienced musician who helps guide the younger, less experienced members, especially Nina. Her relationships with her bandmates are key to her development. She shares a close yet sometimes tense dynamic with Nina, whose raw passion both inspires and challenges Momoka. With the drummer Subaru Awa, she maintains a supportive camaraderie, and with the other members, Tomo Ebizuka and Rupa, she fosters a sense of unity. Over the course of the series, Momoka grows by confronting her own insecurities about being in the spotlight and over her past with Diamond Dust. Initially, she underestimates her capacity for deep emotional connection, but through the band’s experiences and her bond with Nina, she learns to embrace her role more fully, becoming more confident and committed.

Notable abilities include her exceptional guitar skills, characterized by energetic strumming and melodic solos that often carry the emotional weight of the band’s performances. She also has a habit of collecting guitar picks, each tied to a memory from her street-musician days. Her catchphrase, expressing her enthusiasm for music and teamwork, reflects her drive to give everything to the band. While not a fighter, her emotional expression through her playing has a profound impact on both her bandmates and the audience, marking her as the emotional core of Togenashi Togeari.
