Description
Mahiru Kozuki is a seventeen-year-old high school student who serves as the main protagonist of her story. She is a second-year student at Saitama Omiya Gakuen Municipal High School and lives a life that she consciously tries to keep ordinary and unremarkable. Physically, Mahiru has a typical appearance that blends in with her peers; she has short brown hair styled with V-shaped bangs and brown eyes, and she prefers casual, everyday clothing that does not draw attention.

At her core, Mahiru is a deeply sensitive and empathetic individual who cares genuinely about the feelings of others, but this same sensitivity also makes her easily hurt by small slights or criticisms. The central conflict of her character stems from a profound disconnect between her hidden artistic talent and her desperate desire to be seen as normal. In the past, Mahiru was a passionate and skilled illustrator who worked under the pseudonym Yoru Umitsuki. She achieved recognition when she won a prize for a mural of a jellyfish, which she and her friends painted on a wall in Shibuya. However, her pride turned to trauma when she excitedly showed the completed artwork to other friends, only for them to call it weird and unimpressive. This experience of rejection led her to abandon illustration entirely. From that point on, she adopted a philosophy of "nothing matters" and committed herself to blending in, believing that being ordinary is a form of self-protection.

Mahiru's role in the story is defined by her reawakening as an artist. Her carefully constructed ordinary life is disrupted when she encounters Kano Yamanouchi, a stranger who defends the faded jellyfish mural from a disrespectful streamer. Kano reveals herself to be a devoted fan of the artwork, and this unexpected admiration sparks a connection between them. Kano, a former idol now singing anonymously online as JELEE, invites Mahiru to collaborate, believing their combined talents in art and music could be powerful. Despite her intense self-doubt and feelings of inadequacy when comparing her "average" self to Kano's "special" nature, Mahiru is drawn back to her art and becomes the official illustrator for the JELEE project. Her role is to create the visual identity for the group, including its mascot and the artwork for its music videos, providing the essential visual component to complement Kano's music.

Her key relationships are central to her development. The most transformative is with Kano Yamanouchi, whose unwavering belief in Mahiru's work challenges her insecurities and helps her rediscover her own value. Their partnership, which becomes formal on Halloween night, is a bond of mutual inspiration where each girl helps the other confront their past traumas. Mahiru also relies on her childhood friend, Kiui Watase, who provides quiet support and encouragement, even pushing Mahiru to embrace her talents and the collaboration with Kano. At home, she has a younger sister named Kaho, whose desire to film and post content online for popularity stands in stark contrast to Mahiru's own fear of public attention.

Throughout the narrative, Mahiru undergoes significant development. She begins as a girl paralyzed by the fear of standing out, having buried her passion to avoid the possibility of being hurt again. As she becomes more involved with JELEE, she gradually finds the courage to defend her artwork and her right to be special. Her journey is one of reclaiming her own voice and learning that her unique perspective, far from being a flaw, is the source of her greatest strength. While her instinct is to shy away from the spotlight, she learns to support her friends from behind the scenes, though she is sometimes pushed out of her comfort zone, such as when she is forced to perform on stage with a triangle, being the only member of JELEE without musical training.

Mahiru possesses several notable abilities. Her primary talent is her exceptional skill as an illustrator; she has a natural creativity that allows her to create emotionally powerful and beautiful artwork, particularly her signature depictions of marine life, which are central to her artistic identity. Her love for sea creatures, especially jellyfish, is a recurring theme in her life and work. Complementing her artistic ability, Mahiru is also very proficient in domestic skills such as cooking and cleaning, showcasing a practical and nurturing side to her personality that often surprises her friends.
