Description
Masatora Akutsu is the main protagonist of the story, a demon from Hell dispatched to Earth on a mission to recruit a charismatic human who can inspire the demoralized forces of Hell to resist the invading armies of Heaven. To blend in, he takes on the guise of a transfer student at a Japanese high school. Despite his supernatural origins, Akutsu is defined by a pronounced laziness that often masks his true capabilities. While he possesses formidable demonic strength, his lethargic nature frequently prevents him from demonstrating that power, making him appear more hapless than fearsome at first glance. In truth, he is an awkward and caring individual, especially toward those he considers friends, which contrasts with the typical image of a demon.
His primary motivation is to protect his own world from the angels, but his plans are thrown into chaos when he encounters Lily Amane, a beautiful girl he immediately falls in love with. He attempts to recruit her, only for her to reveal herself as an angel, the natural enemy of demons. She effortlessly defeats him and places a magical collar around his neck, forcing him to obey her commands and become her servant. This reversal defines much of the early story: Akutsu is trapped in an unwilling partnership, constantly plotting to regain his freedom while Lily uses him for her own agenda to reform Heaven. Over time, the initial animosity and forced proximity evolve into genuine affection, and his feelings for her grow deeper, though this development is often a source of embarrassment and frustration for him.
Akutsu's role in the narrative is that of a reluctant hero and romantic lead. His journey involves balancing his duty to Hell with his personal desires, especially as his bond with Lily blurs the line between enemy and lover. He forms other relationships at school, where his friendly but lazy demeanor helps him fit in, though his demonic nature remains a secret. His development centers on becoming less passive and more emotionally open, taking greater initiative in both his mission and his relationship. In terms of abilities, he is a powerful demon, capable of physical feats and supernatural attacks, but his lethargy and the constraints of the collar often keep him from acting at full strength.
