Description
Mrs. Widdison is a central human character in the anime adaptation of Hobberdy Dick. She is the wife of Mr. Widdison and the mother of six children, including Martha and Joel. The family, who are Puritans, move from the city to Widford Manor in the Cotswolds after the English Civil War. Mrs. Widdison is initially presented as a strict and somewhat stern housewife. She is concerned with propriety and social standing, and she feels isolated and bored in the countryside because none of the wealthy neighbors come to visit her. This desire for recognition and company is strong enough that Hobberdy Dick, the hobgoblin guardian of the manor, resorts to a trick to fulfill her wish for visitors. When a new chambermaid, Anne Secker, arrives, Mrs. Widdison is very strict with her, demanding that she complete her chores to a high standard. Over the course of the story, her relationship with Anne becomes a key element, as Mrs. Widdison’s stern exterior may soften slightly through the influence of the household’s mysterious events and the kindness of others. Her motivations are rooted in maintaining order in her household and finding her place in rural society. She has no supernatural abilities; her role is that of a maternal authority figure who must adapt to a new environment and learn to balance her rigid Puritan values with the warmth of family and the unexpected magic around her. Her development involves a gradual opening to the people and circumstances of Widford Manor, though she remains a figure of discipline and tradition throughout the series.
