Tenya Ida hails from the renowned Ida family, celebrated for its lineage of professional heroes. His older brother, Tensei Ida, served as the hero Ingenium, deeply shaping Tenya's own heroic ambitions. After attending the prestigious Soumei Junior High School, he enrolled at U.A. High School, where his disciplined nature and leadership skills earned him the role of Class 1-A representative. His Quirk, "Engine," grants superhuman speed and powerful kicks through automobile-like structures in his calves; exhaust pipes release heat buildup, requiring careful management during extended use.
Initially strict and rule-bound, Tenya emphasized order and protocol, moving with signature chopping arm motions and maintaining a serious demeanor. His profound admiration for Tensei fueled his ideals. However, when the villain Stain critically injured Tensei, paralyzing him and ending his hero career, Tenya abandoned his principles to seek revenge. He tracked Stain to Hosu, resulting in a confrontation where Stain inflicted a lasting shoulder injury. This forced Tenya to confront his deviation from true heroism. Aided by Izuku Midoriya and Shoto Todoroki, he faced Stain again, unlocking the "Recipro Extend" technique to temporarily boost his speed beyond normal limits. The ordeal left him scarred but recommitted to honoring his brother's legacy with integrity. He later inherited the Ingenium hero name.
On the Nabu Island mission, Tenya assisted with community tasks like transporting elderly residents. When the villain Nine attacked, severing communications, Tenya joined classmates in evacuating civilians, using his speed for defense and coordination during the crisis.
Over time, Tenya relaxed his rigid adherence to rules. During the Paranormal Liberation War, he participated in unauthorized efforts alongside peers to aid Izuku against Tomura Shigaraki, prioritizing their safety over protocol. His combat skills advanced significantly, achieving Mach 3 speed for rapid long-distance travel, such as transporting Shoto from Kamino to the Gunga Mountains swiftly. He battled high-level threats like Near High-End Nomu and Dabi.
After graduating U.A., Tenya assumed leadership of Team Idaten, his brother's former agency, becoming the No. 13 ranked hero. He grew taller and more muscular. His hero costume evolved to reflect the Ingenium identity, featuring a redesigned helmet with twin horns and mobility-optimized armor that stored compactly as a briefcase. His hair was slicked back, distinct from his earlier style. He continued upholding the Ida family's heroic legacy while mentoring new generations.
