Description
Muneshige Godalin is a retainer of the Kamakura Shogunate and a member of the Godaiin clan, which held close blood ties to the ruling Hojo family. He is the uncle of both Kunitoki and Tokiyuki Hojo, the young heirs of the shogunate. In appearance, he is an adult man of average height with short black hair, brown eyes, and a neatly trimmed goatee, often seen wearing a traditional yukata with his hair tied back. At first glance, he seems to be a caring and supportive uncle to his nephews, but this impression is deceptive.
Godalin's personality is defined by self-interest and a willingness to prioritize his own safety and gain over loyalty or family bonds. When the Kamakura Shogunate fell in 1333 and the Nitta clan began hunting down Hojo remnants, he saw an opportunity to save himself and protect his territory. Rather than honoring the dying wish of Hojo Takatoki to hide and protect Kunitoki, he chose to betray his nephew for a reward. He tricked Kunitoki into traveling without protection and disclosed his location to the enemy, leading to Kunitoki's capture and execution. This act earned him a reputation as the worst traitor among his contemporaries.
His primary motivation is self-preservation and personal benefit. He values his own life and property above any sense of duty or familial loyalty. His greed and lack of honor ultimately backfire, as even the opposing commander Nitta Yoshisada condemned his disloyalty and sought to execute him. When he realized he was being hunted, he attempted to flee, but no one would help him, and even his former allies abandoned him. According to historical accounts, it is rumored that he became a beggar and starved to death.
In the story, Godalin serves as an early antagonist whose betrayal sets the stage for Tokiyuki's journey of survival and revenge. His actions directly cause the death of Tokiyuki's brother, deepening Tokiyuki's resolve. Tokiyuki, guided by Suwa Yorishige, eventually confronts Godalin. Despite Godalin's skill with a sword, his greed and desperation prove to be his undoing. Tokiyuki, with the help of his allies Kojirō and Ayako, manages to kill him, avenging Kunitoki and marking a crucial step in Tokiyuki's development from a fleeing boy to a determined avenger.
Notable abilities include competent swordsmanship, as he is described as having strong sword skills. However, his most defining characteristic is not his combat prowess but his cunning and treachery. He uses persuasion and deception to manipulate his nephew, and he is quick to shift allegiances when it suits his interests. There is no positive character development; he remains a figure of pure self-interest and meets a fittingly ignominious end.
