Description
Junpei Hyuga is the captain of the Seirin High basketball team, where he plays as a shooting guard. Standing at 178 centimeters and weighing 68 kilograms, he has a birthday of May 16th. In his second year of high school, Hyuga has a generally normal appearance with short dark hair, narrow eyes, and glasses. This look contrasts with his first year at Seirin, when he had slicked-back, bleached blond hair and carried a perpetually arrogant expression as part of an attempt to reinvent himself after leaving basketball.

Hyuga's personality has a notable duality. Normally, he is a collected, calm, and dependable individual who has matured into a responsible captain who genuinely cares for his team. However, he is also known as a clutch player, meaning that when the tension of a match rises, his demeanor changes dramatically. In this state, often called clutch mode, he becomes heated, rude, and highly competitive, with a habit of cracking his neck when confident of victory. This shift in personality was a deliberate result of intense psychological training. After a discouraging loss in his first year, Hyuga and his coach, Riko Aida, devised a punishment where he would have to break one of his treasured figurines of Japanese warlords for every shot he missed during practice. This harsh method forged his ability to perform perfectly under pressure, but it also unlocked his more aggressive and brutally honest persona during critical moments of a game.

Hyuga's background is central to his character. During middle school, he played basketball alongside his friend Shun Izuki, but their team was extremely weak and never won a single game. This left him traumatized and convinced of the insurmountable gap between ordinary players and geniuses, leading him to quit the sport and enroll in Seirin, a school known for not having a basketball club. His plans changed upon meeting Teppei Kiyoshi, a towering and passionate first-year who saw through Hyuga's facade. Kiyoshi persistently pestered him to help start a club, and after a one-on-one game that forced Hyuga to confront his true feelings, he relented and rejoined the sport he loved. It was Kiyoshi who proposed Hyuga become the team's captain, a role he accepted despite initial reluctance. On the rooftop with the founding members, Hyuga famously swore a binding oath to make Seirin the best team in Japan, pledging that if they failed, he would make a humiliating public confession of his feelings.

Within the story, Hyuga serves as Seirin's mental pillar and a crucial scoring threat from the perimeter. As a pure shooter, his dribbling and speed are not exceptional, making him reliant on clever movement and screens to get open for his shots. His primary weapon is the three-pointer, and his accuracy is considered top-class, with some opponents recognizing him as one of the best shooters in the series after the Generation of Miracles' Shintaro Midorima. His most notable ability is his clutch shooting, which, once activated, makes his shots almost guaranteed to go in. To further evolve his game, he underwent training with Riko's father, Kagetora Aida, and learned the Barrier Jumper, a fast, step-back move that makes his shot extremely difficult to block. During the intense final match against Rakuzan, Hyuga demonstrated further growth by successfully copying the Earth shooting form of the Uncrowned King, Reo Mibuchi, to secure a crucial play for his team.

Hyuga's key relationships are deeply tied to his journey. He shares a close, long-standing bond with Izuki, who followed him to Seirin and acts as the team's point guard, with the two often engaging in banter over Izuki's terrible puns. His relationship with Kiyoshi is one of profound respect and trust, built on the foundation of being saved from abandoning his passion. While Hyuga often bluntly states that he hates Kiyoshi, his actions and concern for him, especially after an injury, show a deep fraternal bond. He also maintains a long friendship with Riko Aida, the team's coach, who has known him since they attended the same middle school basketball gym. Throughout the series, there are several hints that Hyuga harbors romantic feelings for Riko, though he never explicitly acts on them. Off the court, his family runs a barbershop, and he is known to collect historical figurines, enjoy making dioramas, and have a fondness for cats and a distaste for ghosts.
