Description
Kanna Bismarch, a character from the Shaman King universe, is a German shaman who initially serves as a dedicated follower of the powerful Asakura Hao. She is the leader of the Hana-gumi, an all-female team of shamans whose name means "Flower Group". Her full backstory reveals a childhood marked by isolation and suffering. Born into the distinguished Bismarch family, she vomited ectoplasm, a visible spiritual energy, from infancy, a condition that forced her to spend her early years confined within her family's castle while her parents desperately sought a cure. After her parents died in a mysterious accident, greedy relatives and lawyers stole her inheritance, leaving her with nothing. It was at this lowest point that Asakura Hao appeared, burning the castle and those who had wronged her. He gave her the power to become a shaman, an act that earned him her undying loyalty and shaped her worldview.

In terms of personality, Kanna is typically portrayed as calm, serious, and reserved, but she has a notably short temper and is easily angered. Like many of Hao's followers, she developed a deep disdain for humanity, and she openly admits to a strong dislike of children. Despite her harsh exterior and hatred for people in general, she acts as a protective older sister figure to her younger teammates, Matilda Matisse and Marion Phauna, showing a capacity for caring deeply about her close companions. One of her most defining and persistent traits is her addiction to cigarettes. She is almost always seen with one in her mouth, and this habit is not merely cosmetic but is intrinsically linked to her spiritual power, as the smoke serves as the medium for her guardian ghost. Her loyalty to her master is absolute, believing him to be an ideal figure, and her primary motivation for fighting in the Shaman Fight tournament is to help him achieve his goal of becoming the Shaman King and creating a new world for shamans.

Kanna's role in the story is that of an antagonist turned ally. As a member of the Hana-gumi, she battles on Hao's behalf against the protagonists. During the tournament, she and her team fought against Tao Jun and Tamao Tamamura, where she demonstrated her formidable abilities. In the manga continuity, she and her teammates are later killed by another of Hao's followers, Peyote Diaz, but are revived by Lady Sati. This traumatic event leads to their disillusionment with Hao's cause, particularly when Hao attempts to consume their souls, and they subsequently switch sides to help Yoh Asakura. Her key relationships are central to her identity. She shares a close, familial bond with her Hana-gumi teammates, Matilda and Marion, who are also orphans Hao recruited. Her entire existence is defined by her relationship with Hao, whom she respects as her savior and master; his betrayal of her trust is a turning point in her development. Following the tournament, her role undergoes a significant transformation. She and her team are eventually hired as waitresses at the Funbari Onsen, the hot spring inn run by Tamao, where they are often reprimanded for skipping work and, in Kanna's case, for smoking indoors.

In terms of notable abilities, Kanna is a powerful shaman with a furyoku level of 7,500. Her primary spiritual ally is a medieval knight named Ashcroft, which she houses within a huge suit of armor. Ashcroft fights with a lance and possesses impressive speed and strength, with a reiyoku level of 770. The unique and crucial aspect of her power is her medium, which is the smoke from her cigarettes. She uses this smoke to manifest and control Ashcroft, who can expand his form and use techniques like Burst Joust, where he pierces an enemy with his lance and then expands the smoke within the target. Her ectoplasm is also strong enough to visibly restrain objects and spirits. Later in the series, her abilities expand to include using Over Soul and even performing Soul Integration, which she assists Johann Faust VIII with for medical purposes.
