TV-Series
Description
Hamber is a major antagonist in the Pokémon Horizons: The Series, serving as the second-in-command of the Explorers organization and the loyal butler to its leader, Gibeon. He is an older man with silver hair, known for his calm, collected, and professional demeanor.
In his youth, Hamber was an adventurer and a close friend of a fellow explorer named Diana. Over time, he lost his sense of purpose and direction. This changed when he met Gibeon, a man with a vision for a better world. Finding new meaning, Hamber swore his loyalty to Gibeon and joined the Explorers, eventually rising to become the organization's second-in-command and the Gibeon family's personal butler. As a testament to the deep trust between them, Gibeon entrusted Hamber with one of the cells from his white Zygarde.
Hamber is also a key figure in the life of Amethio, Gibeon's grandson. Following the death of Amethio's mother, Hamber took on the role of the young man's guardian and primary mentor, becoming a paternal figure to him. He personally trained Amethio and later assigned agents Zirc and Onia to serve under his command. His responsibility for training extended to other high-ranking Explorers as well, including Coral, Sidian, and Chalce, making him responsible for cultivating the organization's top talent, though Spinel is noted to be an exception who never received such training from him.
Personality-wise, Hamber is characterized by his stoicism and seriousness, carrying out his duties with unwavering diligence. Despite his stern and occasionally intimidating presence, which can compel obedience with just a composed expression, he speaks to others with politeness and genuine concern for their well-being, especially Amethio's. He acts as a mediator during heated disagreements between other Explorers administrators, often reminding them to remain calm in the presence of their leader, Gibeon. He can also be driven by his own curiosity, as he once decided to personally investigate the mysterious Pokémon that emerged from Liko's pendant instead of immediately reporting the matter.
In the story, Hamber is rarely seen away from his master's side, acting as the primary liaison between Gibeon and his administrators. He oversees mission reports, dispenses advice, and manages the internal affairs of the Explorers. His loyalty to Gibeon is absolute, and his primary motivation is to serve his master's grand ambition.
Hamber's significant relationships are central to his role. His past friendship with Diana becomes a point of conflict when their paths cross again as adversaries. Most importantly, his bond with Amethio defines much of his personal actions. He is fiercely protective of the young man and is shown to be proud of his growth. When Amethio was falsely accused of betrayal by Spinel and subsequently expelled from the Explorers by a disappointed Gibeon, Hamber was visibly stunned and later became suspicious of the events, secretly investigating Spinel. His suspicion only grew after a catastrophic incident at Laqua, where both Gibeon and Amethio were believed to have perished. As Spinel rose to power, Hamber refused to accept the report of their deaths at face value and worked behind the scenes to uncover the truth. He was later overjoyed to learn that Amethio was alive. Eventually, Hamber and Diana managed to repair their fractured relationship, reminiscing about their past adventures.
As a Pokémon Trainer, Hamber is exceptionally skilled. His primary known partner is a Dusknoir, which he has been seen using both to intimidate unruly subordinates and in serious battle. He is a powerful battler, capable of strategically outmaneuvering opponents with moves like Trick Room and holding his own against the combined forces of other administrators. His strength is such that he can easily gain the upper hand against a skilled foe like Amethio, forcing him to use his full power. Hamber has also demonstrated the ability to Terastallize his Dusknoir, further amplifying its power. In later story developments, he has also been shown in possession of a Bloodmoon Ursaluna, indicating a diverse and formidable team.
