Description
Fuecoco is a Fire Croc Pokémon and the primary partner of the young Trainer Roy in Pokémon Horizons: The Series. Before becoming Roy’s first official Pokémon, Fuecoco was a wild Pokémon living on an island in the Kanto region. He is a gluttonous and somewhat ditzy Pokémon who enjoys singing, though he tends to become embarrassed and run away if caught practicing his voice.
The bond between Roy and Fuecoco is uniquely forged through a shared love of music. Roy discovered that Fuecoco responds to singing, which gives the Pokémon the confidence to perform in battle. This connection is key to their partnership; Roy’s encouragement through song helped Fuecoco master the move Ember when he previously struggled to use it effectively. Their musical affinity is central to the character, as Roy often chants or sings to motivate Fuecoco during critical moments.
In the story, Fuecoco serves as Roy's steadfast companion in his quest to become strong enough to encounter the legendary Black Rayquaza. Initially lacking battle experience, Fuecoco grows significantly over the course of the series, learning new moves and gaining confidence alongside his Trainer. He learns Stomping Tantrum during a gym battle against Brassius, and later acquires Disarming Voice, a Fairy-type sound move, to calm rampaging wild Pokémon. Fuecoco also learns Flamethrower and Flame Charge, demonstrating a progression in his offensive capabilities.
A pivotal moment in Fuecoco's development occurs during a training test against the Ghost-type Gym Leader Ryme. In this battle, Fuecoco holds his own against Ryme’s Houndstone, but is ultimately defeated by her Toxtricity, whose overpowering sound attacks leave Fuecoco helpless. This loss prompts significant self-reflection for both Roy and Fuecoco, as Ryme criticizes Roy for not being a good partner, forcing them to reevaluate their strategies and deepen their bond beyond just using song as a simple confidence boost.
Regarding key relationships, Fuecoco shares a friendly rivalry with Liko's Sprigatito (later Floragato), and the two often train and battle together. He also develops a dynamic with Roy's other Pokémon, Wattrel (who later evolves into Kilowattrel), where initial bickering eventually gives way to cooperative teamwork. As Roy becomes a member of the Rising Volt Tacklers, Fuecoco becomes an integral part of the crew, participating in various missions and battles against their adversaries, The Explorers.
