Description
Corail, known as Sango in the Japanese version, is a character from the animated series Pokémon Horizons: The Series. She serves as one of the administrators, or admins, of the Explorers, a primary antagonistic organization in the series. Her first appearance occurs in episode LH006. She is a young girl with a short stature, characterized by her rose-pink hair styled into two pigtails fastened with white hairbands, often accessorized with a bandage. Her typical attire includes a black, shoulder-less top with small pink spikes and a short black skirt with a yellow pattern.
In terms of personality, Corail presents a mostly cheery, playful, and frivolous exterior, but this often masks a more volatile and sharp-tongued nature. She has a tendency to make passive-aggressive and disrespectful remarks, even towards her allies, particularly when they fail at a mission. Along with her colleague Sidian, she is considered a troublemaker within the Explorers due to her lack of discipline and reckless behavior compared to other admins. Corail is easily distracted, has a very short temper, and becomes reckless or furious when things do not go according to her whims. She is also quite childish and vain, occasionally referring to herself in the third person and openly expressing her own cuteness. Furthermore, she can be a loudmouth, carelessly revealing the Explorers' plans in front of their enemies, and she often prioritizes holding a grudge over the organization's larger objectives.
Corail's motivations are largely driven by her personal whims and immediate desires rather than a deep-seated loyalty to the Explorers' cause. She is easily sidetracked by her own interests, such as her obsession with collecting rare and limited-edition items, like a box of Wiglett sweet buns or Sea Digdaman pastries. When her expectations are not met, she reacts with intense anger and is willing to use destructive methods to achieve her goals or vent her frustration. In battle, she prioritizes ending fights quickly rather than employing strategic delays, showcasing her impatience. After a loss or setback, she is known to be a sore loser, reacting with anger and frustration.
Her role in the story is that of a recurring antagonist and a direct obstacle for the protagonist Liko and her friends. Corail is frequently deployed by the Explorers on missions to capture the legendary Pokémon Rayquaza or to monitor Liko and her partner Pokémon Terapagos. As an admin, she is a high-ranking member of the organization and is often tasked with carrying out its objectives in the field. In one arc, she and Sidian even infiltrate the Naranja Academy as students, using the false names Coliflor or Cornbread, to keep a close watch on Liko.
Key relationships define much of her screen time. She is almost always seen working alongside Sidian, who often acts as a reluctant partner attempting to curb her worst impulses. Their dynamic is characterized by her recklessness and his protests, which she usually ignores. She shares a rivalry with the main protagonist Liko, with their confrontations often fueled by Corail's grudges and volatile mood. In her interactions with the other Explorers admins, she is known to taunt and poke fun at her colleagues, such as Spinel, when they experience failures. A flashback reveals that she was the second admin to be trained by the Explorers' butler, Hamber, following Amethio.
Corail shows limited signs of development, centering primarily on her escalating rivalry and the consequences of her actions. While she maintains her bratty and volatile personality, some accounts suggest she begins to show a lighter side after a battle at Naranja Academy, reflecting on her time there as a student and sharing food with her Pokémon. Furthermore, during a later power struggle within the Explorers, she and Sidian are shown opposing the ruthless tactics of another admin, Spinel, suggesting a line they are unwilling to cross despite their own chaotic methods.
Regarding her notable abilities, Corail is a capable but undisciplined Pokémon trainer. Her signature Pokémon is a Glalie, which she uses to unleash powerful Ice-type attacks. Her signature reckless tactic is commanding her Glalie to use the move Self-Destruct, a strategy that causes massive destruction to the surrounding area and frequently endangers her allies, much to Sidian's dismay. Beyond her Glalie, she later captures a Scream Tail, a Paradox Pokémon, after a chance encounter, adding a unique and powerful creature to her team.
