Description
Kazuki Sorimachi is a recurring character in the Junior Youth arc of Captain Tsubasa, known for his role as a forward for both Toho Academy and the Japanese national youth team. He is a consistent and reliable striker who often plays in the shadow of his more famous teammate, Kojiro Hyuga.
Background: Sorimachi first emerges as a key player for Toho Academy during the middle school tournaments. When Hyuga is sidelined and unable to play, Sorimachi steps in as the team's ace striker, demonstrating his ability to carry the team's offensive responsibilities. He forms a formidable offensive unit known as the Toho Trio alongside Hyuga and the playmaker Takeshi Sawada. After middle school, Sorimachi continues his soccer career at Toho Academy High School, where the team secures three consecutive national championships.
Personality and Appearance: In terms of appearance, Sorimachi bears a strong resemblance to Taro Misaki, with similar features but possessing darker eyes and slightly tanned skin. His personality is also comparable to Misaki's gentle nature, though Sorimachi is consistently portrayed as being tougher, more determined, and less delicate or soft. While he is generally calm and quiet, he shows a decisive and gritty side when the pressure is on, capably handling the responsibility of leading the attack when required.
Role in the Junior Youth Arc: Sorimachi is selected to be a member of the All Japan Junior Youth team under coach Tatsuo Mikami. He participates in the rigorous training camp and earns a spot on the squad for the International Junior Youth Tournament. During the team's European tour preceding the main tournament, Sorimachi is a regular starter, notably playing in the friendly match against Hamburger SV. However, once the championship tournament begins, his role shifts to that of a substitute player. He is utilized twice during the tournament, including being selected as a starting member in the semifinal match against France Junior Youth before being replaced later in the game by one of the Tachibana twins.
Key Relationships: Sorimachi’s most significant relationship is with Kojiro Hyuga, Toho's captain and star player. Sorimachi often acts as a supporting striker to Hyuga and functions as his secondary partner in attack. Their on-field chemistry is highlighted by combination plays such as the Toho One-Two, which relies on their strong mutual understanding. He is also a close teammate of Takeshi Sawada, the team's game-maker who provides many of the assists that allow Sorimachi to score.
Development and Later Career: Although he is frequently overshadowed by Hyuga’s exceptional talent, Sorimachi consistently proves himself a valuable and skilled player whenever he gets the opportunity. In the high school finals against Nankatsu High School, he scores the equalizing goal for Toho following an assist from Hyuga, showcasing his continued growth and importance to the team. His role later expands beyond a pure striker; during the events of Golden-23, he performs an aerial defensive maneuver to steal the ball from the Tachibana twins, leading a coach to recognize his potential as a defensive forward, a forward who contributes significantly to the team's defense.
Notable Abilities: While his shots do not possess the overwhelming power of Hyuga’s Tiger Shot, Sorimachi is an excellent and consistent scorer, especially skilled at finishing plays from assists. His technical repertoire includes a variety of precise offensive maneuvers. He is capable of using the Precise Shot, a highly controlled strike with an accurate trajectory that is difficult for a goalkeeper to catch due to its placement rather than its power. He is also proficient with headers, including the Diving Header and Jumping Header, as well as volleys like the Direct Jumping Volley. In the 2018 anime adaptation, Sorimachi is depicted as being left-footed.
