Description
Pünma, numbered Cyborg 008, is one of the nine central characters in the 1980 theatrical anime Cyborg 009 Gekijō Ban: Chō Ginga Densetsu. He is an African man who was transformed into a cyborg against his will. In his original background, at the age of twenty-three he was to be made a slave along with the people of his tribe, but he escaped from his chains and ran. When the slave drivers cornered him, agents of the criminal organization Black Ghost shot them and took him under guard to their laboratory, where he was converted into an experimental cyborg.
As Cyborg 008, Pünma was designed for operation in high-pressure and underwater environments. His mechanical lungs allow him to remain underwater for very long periods, and his body can function even at depths of more than ten thousand meters. His physique was streamlined to increase his swimming speed and his durability in the sea, and he is sometimes called a mermaid or a half-fish man because of his aquatic nature. He is also the only member of the team with genuine combat training, having been a soldier before his conversion, which makes him a capable fighter both in water and on land.
In personality, Pünma is quiet, serious, and composed, with an intellectual manner. He approaches situations calmly and becomes a steady decision-maker when the team is under pressure. His difficult past, including enslavement and forced transformation, has given him a deep and quiet kindness, and he carries himself with the gravity of someone who has experienced great hardship.
His motivation is tied to that past. Like the other 00 Cyborgs, he was made into a weapon by an organization that profits from conflict, and he chooses to turn his abilities against that organization and the forces that exploit human suffering. He fights to protect innocent people from the same fate he endured and to support the cause of peace pursued by the team.
In the film, Pünma is one of the main combatants of the 00 Cyborg team when they are drawn into a confrontation connected to a legend of the super galaxy. He works closely with the other numbered cyborgs, and his discipline, reliability, and combat experience make him a stabilizing member of the group, supporting teammates who are more impulsive or less experienced in battle.
Throughout the story, Pünma is defined by the contrast between the violence imposed on him and the calm, protective person he has become. His role in the film reflects the broader theme of the cyborgs rejecting their intended purpose as weapons, and his aquatic abilities, training, and composed temperament are the traits that most shape his contribution to the team.
