Description
Albert Heinrich, designated Cyborg 004, originates from Cold War-era East Germany. His life before becoming a cyborg was defined by a tragic escape attempt with his fiancée, Hilda. They attempted to flee to West Berlin, often disguised as circus performers or hidden in a truck, but their plan failed when border guards discovered their forged documents and opened fire, killing Hilda and leaving Albert severely injured. Agents of the secret arms-dealing organization Black Ghost recovered his near-lifeless body under the false promise of medical aid, taking him to a laboratory for conversion into a living weapon.
The catastrophic injuries from the crash necessitated the most radical cybernetic transformation among the 00 Cyborgs. Black Ghost scientists, including a reluctant Dr. Gilmore, replaced almost all of his organic body with mechanical parts, often preserving only his brain and spinal cord. This process turned him into a human arsenal, with a machine gun hidden in his right fingertips, an electromagnetic or laser cutting knife in his left hand, and missile launchers built into his knees. The modifications were unstable and caused him significant physical pain, which compounded the psychological trauma of losing Hilda. This despair led to severe suicidal tendencies, making him unsuitable as a weapon. Consequently, Black Ghost placed him, along with other early models, into cryogenic stasis for decades until technology advanced enough to stabilize their systems.
Upon awakening, Albert possesses a cynical, grim, and stoic exterior, a direct result of his traumatic past and forced transformation. He is a somber man with a sharp tongue, haunted by the loss of his love but attempting to maintain a strong facade. Despite his gruff demeanor, he harbors a deep aversion to war and violence, believing his mechanical body is more of a curse than a blessing. His initial despair slowly gives way to a sense of purpose through his camaraderie with the other cyborgs, who become a surrogate family for him. He is a strategic thinker and a level-headed tactician, often serving as the aloof older brother figure to younger teammates like Joe Shimamura (009) and Françoise Arnoul (003). His relationship with Jet Link (002) is frequently contentious due to clashing personalities, but it is rooted in mutual loyalty and respect as fellow first-generation cyborgs.
In the story of Cyborg 009: Legend of the Super Galaxy, Albert joins the team in their mission against the interstellar conqueror Zoa. His role is that of a first-line attacker and heavy-weapons specialist, using his integrated arsenal to protect his teammates. A key part of his development in this narrative involves confronting his death-seeking nature. After being mortally wounded in Zoa's base, he insists on staying behind to allow the others to escape, confessing that he had wished to die ever since being turned into the monster 004. This act of sacrifice leads to his apparent death, but he later reappears alive. In a surprising turn, when offered a chance to be restored as a fully human body, he rejects it, choosing instead to remain a cyborg to be equal to his comrades, symbolizing his acceptance of his hybrid identity. His notable abilities remain his built-in weaponry: the finger machine guns, the knee missiles, and the hand-deployed knife, though his most dangerous weapon is a micro-sized nuclear bomb in his abdomen, which is activated upon his death.
