Description
Shuichi Saito is the orphaned son of Toshio and Yukie Saito. His parents' deaths are directly linked to the supernatural spiral curse affecting their town. His father developed an obsessive fixation on spirals, culminating in a grotesque suicide where he contorted his body inside a bathtub. Following this, his mother developed a severe spiral phobia, leading to self-mutilation to remove perceived spiral patterns on her body, including her fingerprints and hair. She later died by suicide after stabbing her eardrums upon hallucinating spirals in her ears. These traumatic events profoundly impacted Shuichi, leaving him reclusive and emotionally scarred.

Physically, Shuichi is tall and pale with short, curly black hair and light-green eyes. As the spiral curse intensifies, his appearance deteriorates significantly. He becomes noticeably malnourished and sleep-deprived, developing prominent cheekbones, dark under-eye circles resembling bruises, and longer, shaggier hair. He often wears formal clothes that appear oversized due to his extreme thinness, later adopting a tattered cape. His delicate, almost feminine facial features—including thick eyelashes and full lips—contrast with the increasing hollowness of his visage. In the film adaptation, his appearance differs: he is of average height and athletic build with short, straight black hair gelled back. After spiral contamination in this version, his body elongates into multiple spirals, and his eyes become blank white.

His personality is defined by intense anxiety, depression, and reclusiveness stemming from his trauma. He exhibits symptoms consistent with PTSD, including hypervigilance, avoidance of social interactions, emotional detachment, and panic attacks. He is highly perceptive regarding the spiral curse, often detecting its influence before others, though his warnings are frequently dismissed. He displays erratic or manic behavior when threatened, particularly concerning the safety of his girlfriend, Kirie Goshima. Despite his timidity, he demonstrates protectiveness toward Kirie, risking himself to save her from spiral-related threats. He is generally indifferent toward other townspeople, viewing many as already lost to the curse, though he occasionally attempts to warn or aid them.

His relationship with Kirie Goshima is central. He relies on her for emotional stability, and his actions are frequently motivated by a desire to protect her. He repeatedly urges her to flee the town and intervenes to save her from spiral manifestations, such as cutting her cursed, life-draining hair when it attempts to strangle her. Their bond deepens as the curse progresses, culminating in their final acceptance of the spiral together. His interactions with others are minimal and often strained. He shows fear and revulsion toward Azami Kurotani due to her spiral-inflicted scar, recognizing her as an early victim. He also experiences hostile encounters with other traumatized townspeople, who often react violently to his warnings about the curse.

His story progression follows a descent into madness paralleling the town's deterioration. Initially, he attempts rational resistance—destroying spiral-related objects like pottery kilns and urging evacuations. Over time, exposure to relentless horrors, including witnessing multiple spiral-induced deaths and transformations, erodes his mental state. Key events include the deaths of Kazunori Nishiki and Yoriko Endo, who twist together into a spiral, and his futile effort to warn people about an approaching spiral-contaminated typhoon. By the "Butterflies" chapter, he enters a catatonic state, obsessively murmuring "this town is going mad." He suffers a psychotic break in "Chaos," hallucinating his father and enduring physical assaults from other refugees. In the climax, he and Kirie discover an ancient spiral city beneath the town, revealed as the curse's source. Unable to escape, they embrace as their bodies intertwine into a spiral, accepting their eternal fate within the curse's cycle.

The film adaptation presents a divergent portrayal. Here, Shuichi is initially emotionless and stoic, showing no reaction to his father's spiral obsession or death. He collaborates with a journalist investigating the curse but becomes contaminated by the spiral after entering a pottery shack. He transforms into a spiral entity, attacks Kirie, and is not seen again except in brief glimpses of the town's destruction. This contrasts sharply with the manga, where his psychological unraveling is gradual and central to his character.
