Description
Otonashi Meimi is a classmate of the protagonist Naoto and serves as the primary antagonist figure in Jiburiru: Second Coming. Her character arc is rooted in unrequited romantic feelings, as she harbors a deep jealousy toward Rika Manabe after witnessing Naoto confess his love for Rika. This emotional vulnerability is exploited by the demon Asmodeus, who haunts her and transforms her into the dark magical girl known as Misty Mei or Misty May.
In the events of Jiburiru: Second Coming, Meimi is walking alone in an empty park when the demon Rococo suddenly appears. Rococo uses her Eternal Arm attack specifically on Meimi in order to separate the power of Misty Mei from within her body. This demonstrates that Meimi and her dark alter ego are intrinsically linked, and that the demonic forces view her as a vessel or source of power to be manipulated for their own purposes.
Her personality is defined by the jealous feelings she possesses for Rika. This envy is her defining trait and the primary motivation for her actions, as it is the weakness that the demons exploit to turn her into an evil heroine. As Misty Mei, she directly opposes the angelic forces, particularly taking action against Rika, who has been transformed into the heroic Saint Jibril.
The role Meimi plays in the story is that of a fallen or corrupted magical girl. She acts as a pawn for the demonic side, using her powers to attack and spirit away key characters. Most notably, Misty Mei appears and kidnaps Rika, spiriting her away and creating the central crisis of the second series that forces the other characters to take desperate action. Following her capture, Rika is transformed into a darker form of herself, eventually becoming Dark Jibril under the influence of the demonic forces represented by Meimi and her associates.
A key relationship for Meimi is her connection to the demons, especially Asmodeus and later Rococo, who use her as a tool. Her relationship with Naoto and Rika is defined by envy and antagonism. As a classmate who is an outsider to their mutual affection, she occupies a position that allows her jealousy to fester. Her development throughout the series is not one of redemption but rather of deepening corruption, as she becomes more fully integrated into the demonic hierarchy and is used as an instrument to further their schemes against the heroic Djibril.
Regarding notable abilities, Meimi can transform into or be separated from her super-powered alter ego, Misty Mei. As Misty Mei, she possesses considerable magical power, enough to challenge the angelic heroine Saint Jibril. She is capable of summoning monsters to attack her enemies and can use her powers to kidnap individuals, as she does when she spirits Rika away. Her power is considered a target for other demons like Rococo, who seek to extract or utilize the Misty Mei force within her.
